Situation
Can someone screenshot a view once or disappearing photo?

It depends on the app, and no app stops a photo of the screen taken with a second phone. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of view once photos and videos. Instagram has disabled screenshots of disappearing photos in chats. Snapchat allows the screenshot but tells the sender. Signal's Screen Security blocks screenshots on your own phone only, not on the phone of the person you send to.
You sent a photo with view once on, or a disappearing photo in a chat. Now you wonder if it really vanished. Maybe the other person said something that tells you they kept it. Or you are about to send something and want to know which app gives you the most control. Each app handles screenshots in its own way, and the phone sets limits that no app can get around. We checked each app’s rules against its own help pages on 2026-10-08.
What each app does with a screenshot
| App | Screenshot of a view once or disappearing photo | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Blocked. The photo is not saved to the recipient’s gallery | WhatsApp Help Center | |
| Disabled for disappearing photos and videos in chats | Instagram Help Center | |
| Snapchat | Allowed, and the sender sees a screenshot icon | Snapchat Support |
| Signal | Screen Security blocks screenshots only on your own phone | Signal Support |
WhatsApp. View once photos, videos and voice messages “disappear from a chat after the recipient has opened them once.” WhatsApp says the recipient “can’t take a screenshot”, and cannot “forward, copy, save, star, or share” the item. An unopened view once item expires after 14 days.
Instagram. Instagram’s help page now says “taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo and video you’ve sent in a chat.” You can still see the status of what you sent below it in the conversation.
Snapchat. Snapchat does not block the screenshot. It tells you afterwards, with an icon that means “A screenshot has been taken of your Snap” or “of your Chat”. For Private Stories, Snapchat says viewers “can always screenshot or screen record”.
Signal. Signal has view once media and a setting called Screen Security (on iPhone, Hide Screen in App Switcher). Signal is clear about its reach: it prevents “screenshots of Signal on your own device only. This does not prevent someone else from taking a screenshot on their device.”
What the phone allows
The rules above sit on top of what iOS and Android let apps do.
On Android, an app can mark a window as secure. Android Developers says that with this flag, “Android prevents screenshots from being taken and prevents the window from being displayed on a non-secure display, such as a TV or projector.” Android 14 also added a way for apps to learn that a screenshot happened, and shows a notice to the user. Google notes it detects only “a specific combination of hardware button presses”.
On iPhone, no app can block a screenshot. Apple’s screenshot notice for apps “posts after the screenshot is taken.” An app can react, for example by closing the photo or telling the sender. But the image is already saved. That is why Snapchat’s approach is a notice, not a block, on both systems.
The gap no app closes
WhatsApp’s own help page says it plainly: “recipients can take a photo or video of your view once media with a camera or other device before it disappears.” A second phone held up to the screen needs no screenshot at all. No setting on your phone or theirs can stop it.
So the question is not only which app, but who. View once suits a photo that would be awkward if it leaked. It does not suit a photo that would hurt you if it leaked. For those, the safest copy is the one you do not send.
Before you send a private photo
- Check what the photo shows. A face, a tattoo, a room or a window view can identify you. The file does not need a location for that.
- Remove the details in the file. Photos carry the place, the date and the camera model. Our page on sharing files safely shows what goes with a photo.
- Pick a channel with limits. Choose one that expires the copy, counts opens or blocks saving. Know which of those it really enforces.
- Keep the original out of your camera roll. A photo in Photos can turn up in memories and on a screen share.
Where York Vault fits
York Vault can share any item as a private share link. York Vault encrypts the link on your phone. The key sits after the # in the link, so our server never gets it. On the Free plan, a link expires after 7 days or 3 opens, blocks saving and has screenshot protection on. Plus and Pro let you set each rule.

What screenshot protection does depends on where the link opens:
- In York Vault on Android, Android blocks screenshots and screen recording.
- In York Vault or the App Clip on iPhone, the content hides during recording or mirroring. A screenshot ends the view, blanks the content and can tell you. Where iOS allows it, photos draw in a layer that shows black in a screenshot.
- In the web page on other devices, there is no screenshot protection, and the page says so. On Plus and Pro, you can turn the web page off and require the app.
York Vault removes the location, camera details and dates from a shared copy by default. The photo editor can blur a face or a tattoo first. The screenshot protection page compares iPhone and Android in detail.
None of this stops a second camera. York Vault says so on the link page too. If you get photos you did not ask for, see unwanted AirDrop photos. Download York Vault for iPhone or Android.
Questions people ask
Can you screenshot a WhatsApp view once photo?
No. WhatsApp says the recipient 'can''t take a screenshot of anything you send using view once', and the photo is not saved to their Photos or Gallery. WhatsApp also warns that a recipient can take a photo or video of the screen with another camera, and that the phone's screen recorder can capture the audio of view once voice messages.
Does Instagram tell you if someone screenshots a disappearing photo?
Instagram now goes further. Its help page says taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo and video you send in a chat. You can still see the status of what you sent below the message in the conversation, such as whether the other person opened it.
Does Snapchat notify the sender of a screenshot?
Yes. Snapchat shows a screenshot icon in the chat, with entries such as 'A screenshot has been taken of your Snap' and 'A screenshot has been taken of your Chat'. The screenshot still happens, so the notice tells you after the fact. Snapchat also says people who view a Private Story can always screenshot or screen record it.
Can a phone block all screenshots?
Android lets an app mark a screen as secure, and Android then blocks screenshots of it. iPhone has no such switch for apps. Apple sends apps a notice that posts after the screenshot is taken. So on iPhone an app can react to a screenshot, such as by closing the photo, but it cannot stop it.
Is a York Vault share link safe from screenshots?
Mostly, inside the app. In York Vault on Android, Android blocks screenshots and screen recording. On iPhone, a screenshot ends the view, blanks the photo and can tell you. The web page that opens links on other devices has no screenshot protection and says so. No app stops a second camera.
