How do you hide photos from your Apple Watch?

Your Apple Watch copies photos from one iPhone album, plus featured photos and Memories. To stop it, open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Photos, then turn off Photo Syncing. Also check the Photos watch face and notification previews, because both can put a photo on your wrist with no tap.
Many people find out about this the hard way. A private photo shows up on their wrist in a meeting, or on the watch face when a friend asks the time. The watch did nothing wrong. It copies photos from your iPhone by default, in 4 different ways. This guide covers each one and how to turn it off. We checked every step against Apple’s Apple Watch User Guide for watchOS 27 and the iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 on 2026-10-06.
How photos get onto your Apple Watch
There are 4 paths, and each one has its own switch.
| Path | What it shows | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Synced album | One album from your iPhone. Favorites by default | Apple Watch app, My Watch, Photos, Sync Album |
| Featured photos and Memories | Photos that the iPhone picks for you | Apple Watch app, My Watch, Photos |
| Photos watch face | A new photo each time you raise your wrist | Apple Watch app, Face Gallery, or the watch face itself |
| Notifications | Photos that arrive in Messages and other apps | Settings on the watch, and Notifications on the iPhone |
The first two fill the Photos app on the watch. The other two put photos on the screen without a tap, which is why they surprise people.
How to stop photos syncing to Apple Watch
This stops all photo syncing at once.
- Go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then tap Photos.
- Turn off Photo Syncing. Your iPhone stops sending Memories, featured photos and the synced album to the watch.
After this, open the Photos app on the watch and check what is left. Apple’s page describes what the switch stops. It does not say how fast the watch clears photos it already holds.
Keep some photos, but choose which ones
You may like photos on your wrist and only want the private ones gone. Then leave the sync on and control what goes in.
- Go to the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, go to Photos, then tap Sync Album.
- Choose an album that holds only photos you are happy to show.
Apple says you make that album in the Photos app on your iPhone. A good choice is a new album with a handful of family or pet photos, so you know every item in it.
On the same Photos screen, turn off Sync Memories and Sync Featured Photos. Those two pull from your whole library, not from one album. You can also set Photos Limit there to keep fewer photos on the watch.
Why the Favorites album is a risk
A new Apple Watch shows your Favorites album. Many people mark a photo as a favorite to find it again later, and that can include private ones. Every favorite then sits on the watch. To remove one photo, Apple says to remove it from the synced album on your iPhone. If Favorites is the synced album, remove the heart from that photo.
Change the Photos watch face
The Photos watch face is the most public place a photo can be. Apple says a new photo appears every time you raise your wrist or tap the display. Anyone near you sees it.
The face has 3 sources. You pick one when you make the face in the Apple Watch app, under Face Gallery and the Photos category:
- Shuffle, then Featured or People. The face picks from your photo library. Apple says it selects 16 photos each day. You do not choose which ones.
- Shuffle, then Collection. The face uses an album that you choose.
- Choose Photos. You pick up to 24 photos yourself.
For privacy, Choose Photos is the only source where you know every photo. Collection is safe if the album holds only photos you chose. Avoid Featured and People if your library holds anything private. To stop it completely, switch to a watch face with no photos.
Keep photos out of notifications on your wrist
Notifications are the path people forget. By default, the watch mirrors the notification settings of your iPhone. So a photo that someone sends you in Messages can show on your wrist.
On the watch, open Settings, then tap Notifications. Apple lists 3 options there:
- Show Summary When Locked. A locked watch shows only the app name, icon and a short headline.
- Tap to Show Full Notification. The watch shows who sent it first and waits for a tap before it shows the full notification.
- Show Notifications on Wrist Down. This is off by default. Leave it off, so notifications do not show when the watch faces away from you.
Then set previews on your iPhone. Go to Settings, tap Notifications, tap Show Previews, and choose When Unlocked or Never. You can also set this for one app at a time. To change one app on the watch only, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, tap Notifications, tap the app, then tap Custom.
Lock the watch when you take it off
A synced photo is safe only while the watch is locked. Apple’s Wrist Detection locks the watch when you are not wearing it, and it is on by default. Check it on the watch in Settings, then Passcode.
Apple also says your watch passcode can differ from your iPhone passcode, and that different passcodes are better. A family member who knows your iPhone code does not then know the watch code. Be careful with Unlock with iPhone. With it on, your watch unlocks when you unlock your iPhone nearby.
What hiding a photo on iPhone does for the watch
Apple says a hidden photo moves to the Hidden album, and it does not appear anywhere else in Photos, like your Library or other albums. The watch syncs from those albums and from featured photos. So hiding a photo on your iPhone should take it off the watch at the next sync. Apple’s watch pages do not say this in so many words, so check the Photos app on the watch after you hide something. Our guide to hiding photos on iPhone has the steps, and the Hidden album guide explains what the album protects.
You can also tell Photos to pick different photos. On your iPhone, open a photo of a person and tap Don’t Feature a Person. Then choose Feature This Person Less or Never Feature This Person. To stop featured photos and memories altogether, tap Collections, tap your account in the top-right corner, and turn off Show Featured Content. The same settings also change your iPhone memories and the Photos widget. Our guide to hiding photos from Memories and widgets covers them in full, and our guide to hiding photos from search covers Spotlight.
Screenshots of the watch end up in Photos
One more detail goes the other way. If you turn on Enable Screenshots on the watch, each watch screenshot is saved in Photos on your iPhone. Delete the ones you do not want, then empty them from Recently Deleted.
What York Vault does
York Vault is a photo vault on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and on Google Play for Android. Items in York Vault are not in your Photos library, so the watch sync, the Photos watch face and featured photos cannot reach them. York Vault:
- Adds photos with Apple’s photo picker, which needs no access to your whole library. It then offers to remove the originals from Photos after it checks each copy. See import and cleanup.
- Sends notifications with neutral text only, such as “Reminder”. They carry no thumbnails, and on iPhone their previews are always hidden. On Android, Android shows the app name above every notification. So while a neutral icon is on, York Vault sends none unless you turn them on.
- Shows no content in its widget or quick actions. See widgets and shortcuts.
Viewing, export and restore of your own items stay free on every plan. The pricing page lists what Plus and Pro add. Download York Vault on the App Store or Google Play.
