Can a photo vault app hide its icon on iPhone?

An iPhone app cannot remove its own icon, but it can offer other icons. York Vault offers at least 12 neutral icons on the Free plan, such as budget, travel and recipes, and an update never changes the one you pick. To take the app off the Home Screen, use Apple's Hide and Require Face ID, which moves it to a locked Hidden folder.
Why the icon matters
A vault is only private if nobody notices it. In the 836 App Store reviews we studied, 26 say the app’s name or icon gave the vault away. Some say an update or a paywall took the disguise away. Two examples:
- “I updated the app and the calculator icon changed to a Vault icon.” (Privault, 3 stars, 2024-11)
- “"calculator lock - secure vault" is a dead giveaway in our app list and folders” (Calculator Lock, 2 stars, 2026-07)
What York Vault offers
At least 12 neutral icons, on the Free plan. The set has calculator, notes and weather styles, plus budget, fitness, travel, recipes, scanner, clock and compass. It also has 2 plain York Vault marks. Plus and Pro add color and seasonal versions of the set. The same set is on Android, where each icon also carries its own home screen name.
An icon that stays. The icon you pick does not change after an app update. York Vault keeps the internal icon names fixed, and a test checks them before each release.
No copies of Apple’s icons. Apple’s App Review Guidelines (5.2.5) say not to make an app that “appears confusingly similar to an existing Apple product”. So the calculator style icon is a calculator idea, not Apple’s Calculator icon.
How to change the icon
- Open York Vault and go to settings.
- Open the icon options.
- Tap the icon you want.
iOS changes the icon on the Home Screen. Apple’s developer documentation calls this an alternate icon: the app can switch between icons that it ships, but it cannot draw a new one or remove the icon.

What else hides with the icon
York Vault does these too. They matter as much as the icon.
- App switcher cover. When you leave York Vault, a plain cover in the style of your icon replaces the screen before iOS takes its preview picture. The app switcher never shows your items.
- Nothing in search or Siri. York Vault adds no items to iPhone search, Siri suggestions or Handoff. iOS can still suggest the app itself based on how often you use it, and only you can turn that off in iOS Settings. A setup tip points you to that setting.
- Nothing in Files or Finder. Your items live inside the app, under random names. No York Vault folder appears in the Files app or on a computer.
- Plain notifications. Notifications use neutral text such as “Reminder”, with no previews, no thumbnails and no badge counts.
- Neutral widget and quick actions. Both are off by default. The widget shows no content, and its label matches your icon. Home Screen quick actions use plain titles such as “New photo” and “Lock”.
Use Apple’s Hide and Require Face ID with it
On iOS 18 and later, Apple lets you take an App Store app off the Home Screen. Apple’s iPhone User Guide gives these steps:
- Go to the Home Screen.
- Touch and hold the app until the Quick Actions menu opens.
- Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).
- Tap Hide and Require Face ID, authenticate, then tap Hide App.
The app moves to the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library, which needs Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode to open. Apple adds three limits. Apps that come installed cannot be hidden. The hidden status does not sync to your other devices through iCloud. Children under 13 in a Family Sharing group cannot lock or hide apps.
York Vault has a guide screen with these steps, under Settings, then Stealth. The app cannot see whether you hid it, so the guide is text only. Our hide apps on iPhone guide has the same steps.
A lock screen that matches the icon
Each neutral icon has a matching lock screen, free with the base icon set. It uses the same colors, a plain title such as “Budget” or “Notes”, and the code field. No vault word shows. Plus and Pro add extra lock screen styles. For a lock screen that is a real calculator, turn on the working calculator, also free.

What an icon cannot do
iOS gives each app one Home Screen name, and the app cannot rename itself. Every icon you pick shows the same name under it. This limit is on iPhone and iPad. So the name York Vault uses on iPhone and iPad is “YV”, not “York Vault” and not a word with “vault” in it. On Android, each York Vault icon has its own name. Apple’s guideline 2.3.8 also asks that an app’s name and icons, including alternate icons, “are similar to avoid creating confusion”.
So an icon helps against a quick look at your Home Screen. It does not help against a person who opens Settings or App Library and reads the names. For that, combine the icon with Apple’s Hidden folder, a quick exit, and a code only you know. See lock options. For the wider picture, read how to hide photos on iPhone.
Questions people ask
How to hide apps on iPhone?
On iOS 18 and later, touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, tap Require Face ID, then tap Hide and Require Face ID. Authenticate, then tap Hide App. The app moves to the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library. Only apps from the App Store can be hidden.
Hide apps iPhone where to find?
Swipe left past your last Home Screen page to reach App Library. Tap the Hidden folder at the bottom and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. Apple also lists hidden apps in Settings under Apps, then Hidden Apps.
Can a photo vault app change its name on the Home Screen?
Not on iPhone. iOS gives an app one Home Screen name, and the app cannot change it. LockMyPix says so in its own app text: "The app title cannot be changed due to iOS guidelines". So York Vault uses a short name, "YV", under every icon on iPhone and iPad. On Android, each York Vault icon carries its own home screen name.
Are the York Vault icons free?
Yes. The neutral icon set is on the Free plan. Plus and Pro add color and seasonal versions. An app update never changes the icon you picked, because York Vault keeps the icon names fixed and tests them before each release.
Does a disguise icon look like Apple's Calculator or Notes?
No. York Vault's icons take ideas such as a calculator, notes or weather, but none copies an Apple icon. Apple's App Review Guidelines say an app must not look confusingly similar to an existing Apple app.
