The Hidden album and iOS tools
What is the hidden photo album on iPhone?

The Hidden album is a built-in collection in the iPhone Photos app. Photos you hide move there and leave your Library, your other albums and the Photos widget. In iOS 18 and later it sits below Utilities in Collections and opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. It is not a separate vault, and it has no password of its own.
Most people find the Hidden album by accident. Others go looking for it after a photo seems to vanish, or after someone tells them the album exists. This guide explains what the album is and where it lives in iOS 18 and later. It also covers why it can disappear from view, and how private it is. We checked each step and setting against Apple’s own pages on 2026-10-02.
What are hidden photos?
A hidden photo is a photo or video you marked with Hide in the Photos app. To hide one, open it, tap the More button, then tap Hide. Our guide to hiding photos covers this in full, including how to hide many photos at once.
Hiding does not delete or move the file anywhere else. The photo stays in your photo library, and in iCloud Photos if you use it. What changes is where it shows. Apple says a hidden photo does not appear in the Library or in other albums. It also stays out of the Photos widget. It shows in one place only: the Hidden collection.
Where is the Hidden album on iPhone?
- Open the Photos app on your iPhone.
- Tap Collections, then scroll down to Utilities.
- Tap Hidden.
- Tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
Utilities also holds Recently Deleted, Recovered, Duplicates and collections that Photos builds itself. In iOS 27 you can change the order of this list. Tap Utilities, tap Edit, then drag a collection. If the order looks wrong, tap Reset.
How to unhide a photo
Open the Hidden album with the steps above. Touch and hold the photo or video, then tap Unhide. To unhide several, tap Select, tap each item, tap the More button, then tap Unhide. Apple says the items reappear in your photo library. With iCloud Photos on, the change also applies on your other devices.
What hiding does not change
Hiding changes where a photo shows. It does not change much else.
- Storage. A hidden photo still takes the same space on your iPhone.
- iCloud. A hidden photo stays in iCloud Photos like any other photo, and it counts against your iCloud storage.
- Other copies. A copy you sent in Messages, saved to Files or shared in a shared album is a separate file. Hiding the one in Photos does not touch it.
- Your passcode. Anyone who can unlock your iPhone with the passcode can also open the album.
Why is the Hidden album not showing?
The album disappears from view for a few reasons. Work down this list.
- The album is switched off. Go to Settings, tap Apps, then tap Photos. Turn on Show Hidden Album. Apple says the album is on by default on iPhone. When it is off, hidden photos do not show anywhere in Photos.
- You moved it in the Utilities list. Tap Utilities and look for it further down, or tap Edit, then Reset.
- You use a different Apple Account. With iCloud Photos, hidden status follows your account. Make sure every device signs in to the same Apple Account and that iCloud Photos is on.
- The photo is not hidden. It was deleted. Check Recently Deleted, which keeps deleted items for 30 days. Our Recently Deleted guide covers recovery.
- The photo did not save properly. Apple says a photo that could not be added to your library may be in Recovered, below Utilities.
How the Face ID lock works
In iOS 16 and later, Apple locks the Hidden album by default. It also locks Recently Deleted with the same switch. The switch is in Settings, Apps, Photos. Its name follows your iPhone: Use Face ID, Use Touch ID or Use Passcode.
The lock opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode. There is no way to set a different password for the album. If you turn the switch off, both Hidden and Recently Deleted open with no check at all. Our guide to locking photos shows how to add a second lock on the whole Photos app.
Is the Hidden album private?
It keeps photos out of casual view. It is not built to keep them from someone who knows your passcode. Here is what Apple’s pages say.
| Question | What Apple says |
|---|---|
| Does it have its own password? | No. Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode opens it. |
| Is it hidden on my other devices? | Yes, with iCloud Photos. A photo hidden on one device is hidden on all of them. |
| Can I see it on a Mac? | Yes. On a Mac it is off by default. You turn it on in the View menu and unlock with Touch ID or your login password. |
| Can I see it on iCloud.com? | Yes. Select Hidden in the sidebar, then Show Hidden Photos. |
| Who holds the iCloud keys? | Apple, under standard data protection. You alone, with Advanced Data Protection on. |
One detail surprises people. Apple keeps some Photos metadata under standard protection even with Advanced Data Protection on. Its list includes “whether an item has been marked as a favorite, hidden, or marked as deleted”. So the fact that a photo is hidden is not end-to-end encrypted, even when the photo is.
For most readers, the real question is not Apple or iCloud. It is the person in the same room who knows the passcode. Against that person, the Hidden album gives no protection once they unlock the phone.
Can you make a hidden album on iPhone?
Not a second one. Photos has one Hidden collection, and Apple’s guide offers no way to add another or to give it a password. The only locked collections are Hidden and Recently Deleted.
People who want several private groups use one of two paths. Notes can hold photos in locked notes with a custom password, one password per account. A photo vault app can hold any number of albums, and some apps can give each album its own code. The secret photo album guide compares both.
Hidden album or photo vault app?
Users of vault apps compare the two in their reviews. We read 836 App Store reviews of vault apps. At least 15 compared a paid vault with free tools such as the Hidden album. Opinions split.
- “Way better than using the hidden folder. Been a user for 6 years” (Private Photo Vault, 5 stars, 2026-08)
- A 1-star review of Private Photo Vault (2026-08) opens with “all data lost” and ends “Just use Apple’s Hidden Photos album (requires Face ID)”.
Both are fair. The Hidden album is free, has nothing to install, and keeps your photos in the library you already back up. A vault app adds a code your household does not know, plus extras such as a decoy code. It also adds a new place where photos can get lost. Read what a photo vault is and are photo vault apps safe before you move anything.
What York Vault does
York Vault is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android. Plus adds a Mac app, and Pro adds a web app. It opens with its own code, separate from your iPhone passcode. It encrypts each item on your iPhone. It also backs up every item, encrypted, to your own iCloud, or Google Drive on Android. See lock options and encrypted backup. The Hidden album alternative page compares the two side by side.

Questions people ask

Yes. Every iPhone with a current iOS has a Hidden album in Photos. In iOS 18 and later it is below Utilities in Collections. It is on and visible by default, and it opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. If you cannot see it, the Show Hidden Album switch may be off.
What are hidden photos?

It depends on your iCloud setting. With iCloud Photos on and standard data protection, Apple holds the keys to Photos and can decrypt them, for example to help you recover your account. With Advanced Data Protection on, Photos is end-to-end encrypted and Apple does not hold those keys.
Why is my Hidden album not showing?
Check the Show Hidden Album switch in Settings, Apps, Photos first. If it is on, check that you are signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud Photos on, and look in Recently Deleted and Recovered under Utilities. Apple's missing photos article lists these same checks.
