Choosing a photo vault app
My photo vault app was removed from the App Store or will not open. How do I get my photos back?

Keep the app installed and do not delete it, because deleting an app removes its data from your iPhone. Turn off Offload Unused Apps, so iOS cannot remove it to save space. If the app still opens, export everything to Photos or Files today. If it will not open, update iOS, restart, and contact the developer before you reinstall anything.
A vault app keeps your photos inside itself. That is the point of it, and it is also why a vault that leaves the App Store or stops opening feels like a lock with no key. The good news: as long as the app stays on your phone, your files usually stay with it. This guide covers what to do in the first hour, then the slower fixes. We checked Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 and Apple’s App Store support pages on 2026-10-09.
The first hour: protect what is on the phone
- Do not delete the app. Apple says deleting an app “removes it and its data from your iPhone”. If the app left the store, you may not be able to install it again.
- Turn off offloading. Open Settings, tap Apps, tap App Store, and turn off Offload Unused Apps. Apple says this feature removes unused apps when storage is low, while keeping their data. You then tap the icon to reinstall, and that download comes from the App Store.
- Do not reset or erase the iPhone. An iPhone backup or a new phone may not bring a removed app back.
- Leave updates alone for the app, if it still works. To stop automatic updates, open Settings, tap Apps, tap App Store, and turn off App Updates. Do this only if a new version is what broke it.
If the app still opens: export everything today
A removed app can keep working for a long time, until an iOS update breaks it. So treat every day it opens as the day to move out.
- Open each album and export its items to Photos or to the Files app. Most vaults call it Export, Unhide or Save to Photos.
- Restore anything in the app’s trash first.
- Check the counts in Photos or Files against the counts in the app.
- Move the files into a vault that is still supported, then remove the copies from Photos.
If your old vault was Private Photo Vault, LockMyPix or NQ Vault, we have step-by-step guides: move from Private Photo Vault, move from LockMyPix and move from NQ Vault.
If the app is gone from your Home Screen
Before you assume the worst, check that it is not just out of sight:
- Swipe left past your last Home Screen page to App Library and search for the name.
- Check the Hidden folder at the bottom of App Library. Our guide to finding hidden apps covers it.
- In the App Store, tap your photo, then Apps & Purchase History, then Your Apps, and look under Not on this iPhone. Apple’s redownload steps work only if the app is still available.
If the app was deleted and is no longer in the store, the files that lived only inside it are gone from that phone. An iCloud backup of the iPhone made before the deletion is the only place to look, and only if the app’s data was part of that backup. If the app will not open
In our study of 836 App Store reviews of 7 vault apps, 132 reviews describe a vault that will not open. 44 of them mention an update, and 9 say they dare not reinstall. That fear is reasonable. Try these in order:
- Restart the iPhone.
- Free some storage. Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage. A full phone can stop an app from finishing a data update.
- Update iOS, if an update is waiting.
- Leave it open on Wi-Fi and power if it shows an update or optimizing screen. Some apps need a long time on a large library.
- Write to the developer. Use the support address on the App Store listing or the app’s website. Ask one question first: are my items backed up, and will a reinstall restore them?
Only reinstall when the developer confirms your items are in its backup.
Why Apple cannot help
Apple runs the store, not the app. A user found Calculator X gone from the store in August 2023 and asked on Apple Community. A long-time community member answered that Apple has no access to the app’s data. The same answer said Apple cannot force a developer to keep an app in the store. Apple’s own redownload page says only that you can redownload items in your purchase history.
What to look for next time
Pick a vault whose way out does not depend on the vault:
- Export that is free and complete, with no plan needed. See export everything.
- A backup you can restore without the developer, for example to a new phone.
- A repair tool that checks the library and tells you what it found. See vault check and repair.
- Updates that never block the vault while data moves in the background.
York Vault keeps viewing, export and restore free on every plan. It backs up every item, encrypted, to your own iCloud or Google Drive at no cost. Updates move data in the background and never lock you out of your library. York Vault is on iPhone, iPad and Android. Download York Vault.
Questions people ask
What happens to my photos if a vault app is removed from the App Store?
If the app is still on your iPhone, its files stay there with it. The risk starts when the app leaves the phone. Apple says deleting an app removes it and its data, and an app that left the App Store may not download again. Export your photos while the installed copy still opens.
Can Apple get my photos out of a removed vault app?
No. In an Apple Community thread about Calculator X, a long-time community member answered that Apple has no access to the app's data and cannot force a developer to keep an app in the store. Only the app, or its developer, can open what the app encrypted.
Why will my photo vault app not open after an update?
It can be a crash in the new version, a data update that stalls, or a storage problem. In our study of 836 App Store reviews, 132 describe a vault that will not open, and 44 of those mention an update. Free some storage, restart, and contact the developer before you reinstall.
Should I reinstall a vault app that will not open?
Not first. Reinstalling means deleting, and Apple says deleting an app removes its data from the iPhone. Some apps restore from their own cloud backup after a reinstall, but only items that finished backing up. Ask the developer whether your items are backed up before you delete anything.
Does Offload Unused Apps delete my vault?
Apple says offloading removes an unused app while keeping its data, and you tap the icon to reinstall it. That reinstall comes from the App Store. If the app is no longer in the store, an offloaded app may not come back, so turn the setting off while you depend on it.
