The Hidden album and iOS tools

Are hidden photos saved to iCloud?

Apple Photos app icon

Yes, if iCloud Photos is on. Hidden photos upload like every other photo, and they stay hidden on every device signed in to the same Apple Account and on iCloud.com. If iCloud Photos is off, your iCloud Backup can hold your photos instead. Under standard data protection, Apple holds the keys. With Advanced Data Protection on, Photos is end-to-end encrypted.

People who hide a photo often assume it stays on the phone. It usually does not. This guide explains where a hidden photo goes in iCloud, where it shows up, and who can open it there. We checked every step against Apple’s pages for iOS 27 on 2026-10-06. The settings named here are the same in iOS 18 and later. For the basics of the album itself, read our Hidden album guide.

Hiding is a label, not a place

When you tap Hide, Photos does not move the file anywhere new. Apple says hidden photos move to the Hidden album, “so they don’t appear anywhere else in Photos”. The file stays in the same photo library. So the real question is where your photo library goes. That depends on 2 settings: iCloud Photos and iCloud Backup.

Your settings Where hidden photos end up
iCloud Photos on In iCloud Photos, at full resolution, hidden on every device
iCloud Photos off, iCloud Backup on iCloud Backup may include them with the rest of your photos
Both off Only on the iPhone, plus any backup on a computer

With iCloud Photos on

Apple says iCloud Photos uploads your photos and videos “in their original format at full resolution”. It does not skip hidden ones. Apple also covers hidden photos. With iCloud Photos, “the photos that you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too.”

So a hidden photo is in iCloud, and it is hidden everywhere. It also counts against your iCloud storage.

Check that iCloud Photos is on

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap your name, then tap iCloud.
  3. Tap Photos and look at Sync this iPhone.

To check the upload, open Photos and tap Collections. Look at your account icon in the top-right corner. A partly filled blue circle means photos are still uploading. A yellow badge means iCloud paused the sync. A red exclamation mark means your iCloud storage is full. Tap the icon to see the time of the last sync.

With iCloud Photos off

Then iCloud Backup carries your photos. Apple puts it this way: “iCloud Backup may include photos and videos in your Photos or Camera Roll”. The Apple page does not name the Hidden album. It does not need to, because hidden photos are part of the same library.

A backup on a Mac or PC works the same way. Apple says a computer backup includes “almost all” of the data on your iPhone. It leaves out photos that are already in iCloud Photos.

You can keep photos out of iCloud Backup. Apple says you can turn off Photos in your backup settings. That change covers the whole library, not only the hidden part.

Where hidden photos show on your other devices

Device Where to find them What opens them
iPhone or iPad Collections, below Utilities, then Hidden Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode
Mac View menu, then Show Hidden Photo Album. Off by default Touch ID or your login password
iCloud.com Hidden in the sidebar, then Show Hidden Photos Your Apple Account sign-in

The last row matters most. The Apple steps for iCloud.com list no extra check after you sign in. A person who signs in to your Apple Account in a browser can open your hidden photos in two clicks.

Can anyone see hidden photos on iCloud?

Four groups can, in different ways.

  • Anyone who knows your Apple Account sign-in. They see Hidden on iCloud.com, as above. If you share one Apple Account with family, they see it on their own devices too. Our guide to moving your photos off a shared Apple ID covers that case.
  • Anyone who knows the passcode of a device on your account. The passcode opens the Hidden album on that device.
  • People in your Shared Library. This applies to photos in an iCloud Shared Photo Library. Apple says a hidden shared photo “moves to the Hidden album for all participants”.
  • Apple, under standard data protection. Apple keeps the keys for Photos in its data centers. In its words, “Apple can decrypt your data on your behalf”.

With Advanced Data Protection on, Apple no longer holds the keys to Photos. Even then, Apple keeps a key for some details. Its list includes “Whether an item has been marked as a favorite, hidden, or marked as deleted.”

Our guide to iCloud Photos encryption explains the setting in full.

Turn off iCloud.com access

You can stop browsers from reading your iCloud data. In iOS 26.4 and later, open Settings and tap your name. Tap iCloud, tap iCloud.com, then turn off Allow Data Access. Earlier versions use the switch Access iCloud Data on the Web. Apple says Advanced Data Protection turns this access off by default.

Can you keep only hidden photos out of iCloud?

No. Apple’s pages show no way to keep one album or the Hidden collection out of iCloud Photos. The settings work on the whole library. You have three real choices:

  • Keep iCloud Photos on and accept that hidden photos are in iCloud.
  • Turn off iCloud Photos for the whole library, then choose how to back it up.
  • Move the private photos out of Photos into an app that encrypts them first.

If you move them, delete the originals in Photos. Then empty them from Recently Deleted, which keeps deleted items for 30 days. Our Recently Deleted guide has the steps. With iCloud Photos on, a delete on the iPhone also removes the photo from iCloud. Our guide on whether deleted photos stay in iCloud lists the copies that can survive.

What changes on a new iPhone

With iCloud Photos on, the library syncs to the new iPhone, and hidden photos stay hidden. Without it, they come with your backup. To compare Quick Start, iCloud Backup and a computer backup, read do hidden photos transfer to a new iPhone.

What York Vault does

York Vault is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android. It keeps items in its own encrypted library, not in the Photos app. So they never show in the Photos library, the Hidden album or iCloud.com Photos.

The York Vault library with its own albums and the backup status
Items in York Vault are in their own library, not in Photos.
  • Its own backup, encrypted first. York Vault encrypts each item on your phone. Then it backs it up to the private part of your own iCloud. On Android, the backup goes to your own Google Drive, in an app folder that only York Vault can read. See encrypted backup.
  • No readable names in iCloud. iCloud does not see file names, dates, places or album names. It sees that York Vault data exists and roughly how much space it takes. See how backup works.
  • Not in iPhone backups. York Vault leaves its library out of iCloud device backups. Its own backup already covers it.
  • Its own code. Your Apple Account sign-in and your iPhone passcode do not open York Vault. See lock options.

The backup is free on every plan. It uses your own iCloud or Google Drive space.

Download York Vault on the App Store, or on Google Play.

Questions people ask

Can anyone see my hidden photos on iCloud?

Anyone who can sign in to your Apple Account can. On iCloud.com, Apple's steps to view them are to select Hidden in the sidebar, then Show Hidden Photos. On a device, Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode opens the Hidden album. Apple can also decrypt Photos under standard data protection, but not with Advanced Data Protection on.

Do hidden photos take up iCloud storage?

Yes. With iCloud Photos on, a hidden photo stays in your iCloud Photos library at full resolution, so it counts against your iCloud storage like any other photo. Hiding changes only where the photo shows in the Photos app. It does not make the file smaller or move it out of iCloud.

Are hidden photos backed up if iCloud Photos is off?

They can be. Apple says that if you have not turned on iCloud Photos, iCloud Backup may include the photos and videos in your Photos app. Apple's page does not single out hidden photos. A backup to your Mac or PC can also hold them, because Apple says a computer backup includes almost all of the data on your iPhone.

Can hidden photos be seen on iCloud.com?

Yes. Go to icloud.com/photos and sign in. Select Hidden in the sidebar, then select Show Hidden Photos. If you turned on Advanced Data Protection, data access on iCloud.com is off by default. If you turn it back on, a trusted device must approve each new web session.

Why are my hidden photos not syncing to iCloud?

Hidden photos sync with the rest of the library, so check the library first. Make sure Sync this iPhone is on in Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos. Then open Photos, tap Collections and look at the badge on your account icon. A yellow badge means sync is paused, and a red exclamation mark means iCloud storage is full.

If I hide a photo in a Shared Library, is it hidden for everyone?

Yes. Apple says that if you hide a photo in your iCloud Shared Photo Library, the photo moves to the Hidden album for all participants. Every participant can then view it in their Hidden album or stop hiding it. So hiding a shared photo does not keep it from the other people in the library.
