How do I share my screen on a call without showing private photos or notifications?

A shared screen shows everything you open and every banner that arrives. Turn off notifications for screen sharing first. On iPhone, go to Settings, Notifications, Screen Sharing and turn off Allow Notifications. On Android and computers, share a single app, window or tab instead of the whole screen. Never open your photo library while you share, because the whole grid shows.

You are on a call with your manager, a client or a teacher. You tap share screen to show one thing. Then a message banner slides in with a name and a preview. Or you open Photos to find a screenshot, and the whole grid of recent photos is on the call. Everyone saw it before you could close it. This page shows how to share only what you mean to share on iPhone, Android and a computer. We checked each step against Apple’s, Google’s and Zoom’s own pages on 2026-10-08.

What a shared screen shows

When you share your whole screen, the other people see the same pixels you do. That includes three things people forget:

  • Banners. A message preview, a calendar invite or a delivery alert appears on the share as it arrives. On iPhone, Apple says notifications are allowed by default when you share with SharePlay or Screen Mirroring.
  • The photo grid. Photos opens on your most recent pictures. Scrolling to find one photo shows dozens more.
  • App switching. Each app you pass on the way to the right one shows for a moment.

The fix is the same on every system. Stop the banners first, then share the smallest thing that works: one app, one window or one tab.

On iPhone: FaceTime, Zoom and other apps

  1. Turn off notifications for screen sharing. Go to Settings, tap Notifications, tap Screen Sharing, then turn off Allow Notifications.
  2. Turn on a Focus for the call. Open Control Center, tap Focus, then turn on Do Not Disturb. Zoom’s own help says to do this “before starting a screen share”, to “prevent unexpected notifications”.
  3. Open the app you want to show before you start. In FaceTime, tap the screen and tap the share button. Tap Screen Sharing, then Share My Screen. A countdown from 3 to 1 gives you a moment to get ready. In Zoom, tap Share Content, tap Screen, then tap Start Broadcast.
  4. Stop when you are done. In FaceTime, tap the share button, then tap Stop next to Screen Sharing. Ending the call also ends the share.

The FaceTime and Zoom steps above share your whole iPhone screen, so the order of steps matters. In a one-to-one FaceTime call, the other person can tap, draw or write on your screen. You can also give them control of it. Keep that off when you have private apps on the phone.

On Android: share a single app

Since Android 14 QPR2, Android can share one app instead of the whole screen. Android Developers says app screen sharing leaves out “the status bar, navigation bar, notifications, and other system UI elements” from the share.

  1. Start the share in your call app.
  2. When asked, tap A single app.
  3. Pick the app from the list, then start sharing.

In Google Meet on Android, tap Present now, then Present a single app. Google’s Pixel help says “your notifications and status bar are hidden”. When you go to another app, “the stream is paused”. Menus can differ on Samsung and other phones.

On a computer

Share a window or a tab. In Google Meet, click Present now, then select A tab or A window instead of Your entire screen. A window or tab share keeps banners and other apps off the call.

Turn off notifications on a Mac. Open System Settings and click Notifications. For mirroring or sharing the display, choose Notifications Off. Apple says this keeps others from seeing notifications “when, for example, you are giving a Keynote presentation”.

Close what you do not want seen. If you must share the whole screen, quit Photos, Messages and any private app first. Our Mac app page explains York Vault on a Mac. The same rule applies there: lock it before you share.

If you need to show a photo on the call

Do not scroll your library on a live share. Find the photo first, with sharing off, and put it in an album or a folder of its own. Then share that one window, or send the file in the call chat instead.

If the other person needs to keep it, a private share link is safer than an attachment. It expires after a set time or number of opens, and you can revoke it.

Where York Vault fits

York Vault keeps your private items out of your photo library. They never appear in the grid you scroll on a call. It also guards its own screens during capture.

Discretion settings with App switcher cover and Keep out of Spotlight and Siri switched on
  • On Android, York Vault marks every screen as secure. Android keeps secure windows out of screenshots and off displays that are not secure. Android Developers says the same flag “also helps with remote screen sharing use cases”. In a whole-screen share, York Vault shows as a blank area.
  • On iPhone, iOS lets apps know when the screen is “actively recording, mirroring, or using AirPlay”. While that is true, York Vault replaces every item with a plain cover. Try it once with a friend on the call app you use, so you know what they see.

The screenshot protection page compares both systems in detail. York Vault also locks the moment it goes to the background, and quick exit can lock it and open another app when you turn the phone face down.

Your photo app is a separate matter. Photos you add to York Vault stay in Apple Photos until you remove them. The import and cleanup page shows how, and our guide to hiding photos on iPhone covers the built-in options. For photos that pop up on the home screen by themselves, see when the photo widget shows a private photo. For AirPlay and the car, see photos on a car screen. To try York Vault, download it for iPhone or Android.

Questions people ask

Does iPhone show notifications when you share your screen?

Yes, by default. Apple says notifications are allowed when you share your screen with SharePlay or Screen Mirroring. To stop them, go to Settings, tap Notifications, tap Screen Sharing, and turn off Allow Notifications. A Focus such as Do Not Disturb also silences most notifications during a call.

Can people see my notifications when I share my screen on Zoom?

They can, if a banner appears on the screen you share. Zoom's own help says to turn on Do Not Disturb on your device before you share, to prevent unexpected notifications. On a computer, share one window instead of the desktop, so banners from other apps stay off the share.

How do I share only one app on Android?

On Android 14 QPR2 and later, the share prompt can offer A single app. Pick it, then choose the app. On a Pixel, Google says the other people see only that app, and your notifications and status bar are hidden. When you switch to another app, the share pauses.

Can someone control my iPhone during a FaceTime screen share?

Only if you allow it. In a one-to-one FaceTime call, the other person can tap, draw or write on your shared screen to point at something, and those marks fade after a few seconds. You can also give them control of your screen, so keep that off when private apps are on the phone.

Does York Vault show up when I share my screen?

On Android, no. York Vault marks every screen as secure, so Android keeps it out of screenshots and recordings, and a screen share shows a blank area. On iPhone, York Vault shows a plain cover while iOS reports that the screen is recorded, mirrored or sent with AirPlay. Test it once with a friend before an important call.
