Check backup and export before you switch.

Why do people leave Private Photo Vault?

Private Photo Vault has 1,016,143 US ratings at 4.8 and has been on the App Store since 2011. In our review study it was the most loved app: of 100 reviews from the Australian and Canadian App Stores, 73 give 5 stars. The complaints are fewer than for most rivals, but they are serious when they happen.

Losing files on a new phone or reinstall

Most of the 9 loss reviews follow a new phone, a reinstall or a lockout. One user wrote: “only to discover after reinstalling this app….ALL my photos disappeared!” (1★, July 2026). The FAQ explains why: “Deleting the app removes the photos and videos stored in it from your phone.” The free version does not back up to Cloud Vault, so a free library lives only on the phone.

A backup that ends with the plan

Cloud Vault is a paid feature, and the FAQ says that when you switch to the free plan, “your Cloud Backup will be deleted.” A recent review reads: “Unless I buy a subscription all will be erased.” (1★, September 2026).

Lockouts and support

6 reviews describe a lost PIN with no way back. Recovery works only if you set a recovery email first. “all data lost; would not recommend. Just use Apple’s Hidden Photos album (requires Face ID)” (1★, August 2026). Another says support opened a ticket but took “zero action” (1★, July 2026).

Ads and the end of one-time Pro

7 reviews complain about ads, some from paying users: “it is unfair and poor form to inflict them on long term existing subscribers.” (5★, July 2022). Others miss the one-time Pro purchase that a subscription replaced.

What to look for in a replacement

Private Photo Vault sets a high bar for ease of use. A replacement should keep that and fix the gaps:

  1. A free backup that covers every item and does not expire with a plan.
  2. Written export steps, and an export of all items in one go.
  3. A recovery path that is not email, so nobody with access to your inbox can reset your code.
  4. No ads, or a clear statement of which plan removes them.
  5. The features you use daily: albums, a decoy, Face ID and a break-in record.

How to export your photos from Private Photo Vault

Private Photo Vault does not publish written export steps. Its FAQ, feature pages and guides do not list button names, and its guide on moving phones says “The correct steps depend on your devices and the app version.” The official path is a tutorial video on its tutorials page, titled “Export, move & delete files”. We could not confirm whether the app has a select-all export or a limit.

A safe order of steps:

  1. Download Cloud Vault originals first. If you use Space Saver, the full files may live only in Cloud Vault, and videos play from the cloud. The app’s own text says: “Please download all items you want to export from Cloud Vault before exporting.” Bring them back to the phone first, and check that you have enough free space.
  2. Export each album to the Photos app, following the in-app export option shown in the video.
  3. Use Wi-Fi Transfer for large libraries. It lets you download files to a computer through a web browser.
  4. Count the items in Photos or on the computer against each album.
  5. Add them to your new app, check that each item opens, then delete them from Photos and Recently Deleted.

Keep Private Photo Vault installed and your Cloud Vault password at hand until the new app has everything. Our new iPhone transfer guide covers the same move between phones.

What Private Photo Vault does well

Private Photo Vault earns its ratings:

  • Years of reliable use. 13 reviews praise long use across phones and iPads. “Never has let me down. On 4th phone with app. So easy transfer” (5★, September 2026).
  • Ease. 10 reviews say it is simple. “I tried a couple others before this and had problems even using them.” (5★, August 2026)
  • Cloud Vault encryption. The backup uses a password that the company does not keep, and the site says “Our team cannot decrypt or view your backed-up photos and videos.”
  • Depth of safety features: a decoy password, a break-in report with photo and GPS, album passwords, Face Down Lock and a location-based lock.
  • Wi-Fi Transfer to a computer, a photo editor and a private browser.
  • iPhone and Android versions.

If you pay for Cloud Vault and it works for you, there may be no reason to move.

What York Vault does differently

York Vault is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android. Plus adds the Mac app, and Pro adds the web app. Here is what it does differently:

  • Free backup of every item to your own iCloud, or Google Drive on Android, encrypted on your phone. It does not shrink or end when a plan ends. See encrypted backup.
  • A recovery key you hold. 12 words shown once at setup. No email reset, and we never see your code.
  • Export of everything to Photos or Files in one step, with Live Photos and dates kept.
  • Free trash recovery for 30 days on every plan.
  • A cover code, an erase code and a photo on a wrong code, all free.
  • Wi-Fi transfer to a computer and a photo editor, free, plus a private browser and a location lock in Plus and Pro.
  • No ads on any plan. York Vault uses an attribution tool to measure its own ads, and its privacy label says so.

What is Private Photo Vault used for?

People use Private Photo Vault to keep photos, videos and copies of documents behind a PIN, pattern or password, away from the main Photos library. How do I recover Private Photo Vault without a backup?

If you deleted the app, the FAQ says the photos stored in it are removed from your phone, and without a usable backup the company cannot restore them. What is the difference between Private Photo Vault Premium and Ultimate?

Both are subscriptions. In the app, Premium includes 100 GB of Cloud Vault backup, and Ultimate includes 1,000 GB plus features such as unlimited sub albums and duplicate detection.
