Why do people switch from Keepsafe?

Keepsafe is one of the biggest vault apps, with 383,624 US ratings at 4.7 and more than 13 years on the App Store. It is also the app with the most complaints in our review study. We read 495 Keepsafe reviews from the US, Canadian and Indian App Stores, from 2017 to September 2026, and tagged each one by theme. Half came from Apple’s “most helpful” sort, which favors long, angry reviews. So these counts show what makes people write, not how common each problem is.

Lost photos, often at the worst moment

Of the 111 loss reviews, 45 are from 2025 or 2026. Users name updates, new phones and reinstalls as the trigger. One wrote: “I’ve been using Keepsafe and paying for it for 4 years. The first time I actually needed to restore my photos, I discovered that all of my pictures were gone.” (1★, August 2026). Keepsafe’s own help center explains part of the risk: on the free plan only 200 items sync, and “Any unsynced content will be permanently lost” if you uninstall.

A vault that will not open

The largest group describes crashes or a migration screen that never ends: “stuck on the “Updating Keepsafe. DO NOT CLOSE THE APP.” screen for more than 7 days” (1★, July 2026). Some users say they dare not reinstall in case they lose what they cannot reach.

Paying to get your own files back

54 reviews describe a trial that ended, a downgrade that stalled, or Trash that only Premium can open. Keepsafe’s help center confirms: “Trash recovery is a Premium feature.” One reviewer put it plainly: “Asking money for keeping photo is fine but asking money for not deleting come on !!!” (1★, March 2026).

A redesign that removed features

11 reviews from 2025 and 2026 name a feature the redesign removed, such as slideshow, drag to reorder or import from Files. “The app used to have a slideshow feature. Gone.” (5★, July 2025).

What should a Keepsafe replacement do?

Use the problems above as a checklist:

1. Free export of everything. You should never need a plan to take your files out.
2. A backup that covers every item, with a status on each item and a restore you can test on a new phone. See encrypted backup.
3. Free trash recovery for at least 30 days.
4. Updates that never lock the vault while a migration runs.
5. Local video playback, so a video plays without waiting for a cloud download.
6. A clear encryption statement, including whether the company can read your files.

How to export your photos from Keepsafe

Keepsafe’s help center gives these iOS steps, and export is free on every plan:

1. Open an album to export from.
2. Tap Select in the top right corner.
3. Choose the items you want to export.
4. Tap the send icon in the bottom left corner.
5. Tap Export to Camera Roll.

Keepsafe says that “Exporting will decrypt your files to their original state and move them out of Keepsafe.” Exported items go back to their original date in your camera roll.

Before you start:

• Recover Trash first. Free users cannot restore items from Trash. If you are on the 30-day trial or Premium, move anything you need out of Trash before your plan ends.
• Work in batches. The help page shows multi-select per album, not a one-step export of the whole vault. One reviewer says “select all” crashes the app above “a couple hundred images” (2★, January 2026).
• Download offloaded originals. If you use Space Saver, make sure the full files are on the phone before you export.
• Do not uninstall Keepsafe until you have counted every item in Photos.

What Keepsafe does well

Keepsafe is popular for good reasons, and many users stay for years:

• Sync across phones and tablets, on iOS and Android, under one account. 24 reviews praise years of reliable use or a clean move. “it always works with no hiccups and keeps everything backed up even when you get a new phone!” (5★, August 2026).
• A decoy vault that users like. 11 reviews praise it.
• A face-down switch to another app. “I love how if you turn your phone down you can have it switch to another app!” (5★, June 2026).
• A delayed PIN reset. Keepsafe waits 5 minutes before it sends the access code, which slows down someone who has your phone and your email.
• Safe Send, for sharing a photo for a limited time.
• A free plan for casual use, and a 30-day complimentary Premium trial.
