How do you stop private photos from showing in iPhone search?

Apple Photos app icon

Hide the photos in the Photos app, and they leave the library, albums and search inside Photos. To keep Photos out of Spotlight, open Settings, tap Search, tap Photos, and turn off Show App in Search. Locking the Photos app with Require Face ID also keeps its information out of search, Siri suggestions and notification previews.

Search on an iPhone is good at finding photos, which is the problem when you want a few of them not found. A friend who searches “beach” on your phone sees every beach photo you have. This guide shows where iPhone search reaches and how to keep private photos out of it, using Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27, checked on 2026-10-09.

Two kinds of search reach your photos

Spotlight. Swipe down on the Home Screen, or tap Search on models with Face ID. Apple says Spotlight can find “images in your photo library” and even text inside photos with Live Text. A search for Photos also offers a shortcut to the Favorites album.

Search in the Photos app. Tap the Search button in Photos. Apple says it suggests dates, places and people you named, and you can search by month, city, business name or category, such as “beach” or “sunset”.

Step 1: hide the photos

  1. Open Photos.
  2. Touch and hold the photo or video.
  3. Tap Hide, then confirm.

Apple says hidden items move to the Hidden album and “don’t appear anywhere else in Photos, like the Library, other albums, or even the Photos widget”. Our Hidden album guide covers the album and its lock.

Step 2: keep Photos out of Spotlight

  1. Open Settings and tap Search.
  2. Scroll down and tap Photos.
  3. Turn off Show App in Search.

Apple’s guide calls this choosing which apps to include in search. Do the same for other apps that hold private things, such as Notes or Files.

Step 3: lock the Photos app

  1. Touch and hold the Photos icon until the Quick Actions menu opens.
  2. Tap Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).
  3. Confirm.

Apple says information inside a locked app does not appear in notification previews, search, Siri suggestions, CarPlay or call history. Apple also says built-in apps can be locked but not hidden, so the Photos icon stays on your Home Screen. Our guide to hiding apps has the details.

Other places private photos turn up

Search is one of several ways your library shows itself:

Keep them out of the library

Each of these steps hides photos from one view. To keep them out of every view, the photos have to leave the library. York Vault encrypts the photos you add in its own storage and adds nothing to Spotlight or Siri suggestions. Once it has checked its copies, it removes the originals from Photos. Photos then keeps the removed items in Recently Deleted for 30 days, and our Recently Deleted guide shows how to empty it. See import and cleanup. York Vault is on iPhone, iPad and Android. Questions people ask

Can iPhone search find my private photos?

Yes. Apple says Spotlight can find images in your photo library and even text in your photos with Live Text. Inside Photos, search works by date, place, business names and what is in a picture, such as a beach or a sunset. Any photo in the main library can turn up.

Do hidden photos show up in search?

Apple says hidden photos move to the Hidden album and do not appear anywhere else in Photos, like the Library or other albums. Apple does not list Spotlight in that sentence. To be sure, also turn off Show App in Search for Photos in Settings, Search.

How do I remove Photos from Spotlight search?

Open Settings, tap Search, scroll down, tap Photos, then turn off Show App in Search. Apple says this chooses which apps appear in search. The same screen works for any app, so you can do it for Notes, Files or a chat app too.

Does locking the Photos app hide photos from search?

Apple says information inside a locked app does not appear in other places, such as notification previews, search, Siri suggestions, CarPlay and call history. So locking Photos with Require Face ID keeps it out of search. Apple notes that built-in apps can be locked but not hidden.
