Moving and backup
Does deleting a vault app delete your photos?

Usually, yes. A vault app keeps your photos inside its own storage, and iPhone and Android delete that storage with the app. Only a copy outside the phone survives: the app's cloud backup, a backup file or an export. Many vault apps back up only on a paid plan or only part of the library. Check the backup count before you delete anything.
People delete a vault app for many reasons. The phone is full, the app will not open, a code is forgotten, or a better app came along. The delete takes a few seconds. What it takes with it depends on one question: does a complete copy of your items exist anywhere else? This guide shows where vault apps keep your photos, what each delete option does on iPhone and Android, and which of 8 popular vault apps keep a copy. We checked every Apple and Google step on 2026-10-06.
Where a vault app keeps your photos
A vault app copies your photos out of the Photos app or the gallery into its own storage. That storage belongs to the app and no other app can read it. That is the point of a vault, and it is also the risk.
- iPhone. Apple’s iPhone User Guide says: “Deleting an app removes it and its data from your iPhone.” The same page adds that data the app stored in iCloud is not deleted with the app.
- Android. Android Developers says: “When the user uninstalls your app, the files saved in app-specific storage are removed.”
So the delete itself is not the danger. The danger is a library that lives only on the phone. In our study of 836 App Store reviews of 7 vault apps, 136 describe lost photos, and 26 of those name a reinstall or a deleted app as the trigger. At least 7 users had also deleted the originals from Photos, so the vault held the only copy.
Delete, offload, archive: what each one does
iPhone and Android each have a softer option that keeps the data. Pick the action on purpose.
| Action | Where | What happens to the vault’s data |
|---|---|---|
| Delete App | iPhone | Removed from the iPhone |
| Remove from Home Screen | iPhone | Kept. The app moves to App Library |
| Offload | iPhone | Kept. The app is removed, its documents and data stay |
| Uninstall | Android | App-specific files removed |
| Archive | Android 15 and up | Kept. The app is removed, its data and icon stay |
| Clear storage | Android | Apple has no match. Google says it “permanently deletes all app data” |
On iPhone
To delete an app, touch and hold it on the Home Screen or in App Library. Tap Remove App, then Delete App, then Delete. If you only want the icon out of sight, tap Remove from Home Screen instead. The app and its data stay in App Library.
To offload one app, open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage. Tap the app’s name. In this view Apple offers to offload the app or delete it. Offload frees the space the app uses and keeps its documents and data. iPhone can also offload apps on its own when storage is low: Settings, Apps, App Store, Offload Unused Apps. The icon stays with a cloud symbol, and a tap reinstalls the app.
On Android
To uninstall, open the Google Play Store app, tap the Profile icon, tap Manage apps & devices, then Manage. Select the app and tap Uninstall. To archive instead, open Settings, tap Apps, select the app and tap Archive. Google says some of these steps work only on Android 15 and up.
Avoid Storage & cache, Clear storage on a vault app. On a Pixel you reach it through Settings, Apps, See all apps. Google’s own text for that button is “Permanently deletes all app data.”
Which vault apps keep a copy after you delete them?
This table covers the 8 apps in our research. The backup column says where the copy goes and which plan includes it.
| App | Where the backup goes | What deleting the app does |
|---|---|---|
| Keepsafe | Keepsafe’s own cloud. Basic syncs up to 200 items, Premium 10,000, Lifetime 100,000 | Keepsafe says “Any unsynced content will be permanently lost” |
| Private Photo Vault | Cloud Vault, a Premium feature | The FAQ says deleting the app removes the photos and videos in it from your phone |
| LockMyPix | Your own iCloud or Google Drive, on Premium. Also a backup file | iPhone: files deleted by default. Android: files stay in a folder on the phone |
| Vaultaire | Your own iCloud, free and on by default | iPhone app data goes, the iCloud backup stays |
| NQ Vault | NQ’s cloud, sold with Premium | Items not in the cloud go with the app |
| SPV | Google Drive, paid, capped at 1,000 photos | The listing says photos and data in the app are deleted |
| Calculator Lock | iCloud or Google Drive. The listing does not name a plan | The listing says not to uninstall, or all files are lost |
| Privault | None | The app says files inside are removed with the app |

Some of these apps do this well. Vaultaire backs up the whole library to your own iCloud for free. Keepsafe marks each item that is not backed up yet. LockMyPix keeps Android files after an uninstall, and it makes a backup file you can move yourself. The weak cases are free plans with no backup at all, and paid backups with an item cap.
Already deleted it? Where to look
Work through these in order. Do not reset or erase the phone while you look.
- Reinstall and sign in. On iPhone, open the App Store, tap your picture, tap Apps & Purchase History, then Your Apps. If the app has a cloud account, sign in with the same account. Keepsafe, for example, restores only the items that synced.
- Restore from the app’s own backup. Apps that back up to your iCloud or Google Drive offer a restore at first launch. You usually need the same code or recovery phrase as before.
- Check Recently Deleted. If you imported photos in the last 30 days and the app deleted the originals, they may still be in Recently Deleted in Photos. See our Recently Deleted guide.
- Check an older iPhone backup. Apple says iCloud Backup includes “app data for the apps that you’ve downloaded.” A backup made before the delete may hold the vault. But Apple’s restore steps start from a phone with all content erased, which replaces what is on it now. Private Photo Vault’s FAQ also says some customers had problems restoring its data from iCloud device backups. Our guide to moving a vault to a new iPhone explains why a key can stay behind.
- On Android, look for LockMyPix files. LockMyPix says its Android files persist after an uninstall. Reinstall it and sign in with the same password.
Before you delete any vault app
Do these checks while the app still opens.
- Count your items. Write down the count in every album, including any decoy vault, which has its own items.
- Read the backup status. Wait until the app shows every item as backed up, not only most of them.
- Make a second copy. Export the items you cannot replace, or make the app’s backup file if it has one.
- Write down every code. The app code, any cloud password and any recovery phrase.
- Cancel the plan in the store. Deleting the app does not cancel it. See how to cancel a subscription.
- Delete last. Delete the app only after the new place shows the same count.

What York Vault does
York Vault is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android. It is built so that a delete costs you nothing that it has backed up.

- Backup is on by default. Once you agree at setup, York Vault backs up every item for free to your own iCloud, or to the app data folder of your own Google Drive on Android. It encrypts each item on your phone first. See encrypted backup.
- Each item shows its state. An item carries a badge until the backup confirms it, and Settings shows the count, such as 1,204 of 1,204. See how backup works.
- The backup outlives the app. Apple says iCloud data stays when you delete an app. On Android, Google says the app data folder goes when you remove the app from your My Drive or delete its hidden data. See backup on Android.
- Reinstall and restore. York Vault finds the backup, and your code or 12-word recovery key opens it. A restore check then counts every item.
- Turning backup off asks first. York Vault asks whether to keep or delete the cloud copy.
Viewing, export and restore stay free on every plan. See pricing for what Plus and Pro add, or download York Vault.
Questions people ask
If I delete a photo vault app, will my photos be deleted?
Yes, for every item that is only on the phone. Apple says deleting an app removes it and its data from your iPhone. Android removes an app's own files when you uninstall it. Items that the app backed up to its cloud, to your iCloud or to Google Drive can come back when you reinstall and sign in or restore.
Can I recover photos from a deleted vault app without a backup?
Usually not. The app's files go away with the app. Three places are worth a check: an iPhone backup made before the delete, Recently Deleted in Photos if you imported in the last 30 days, and on Android, a LockMyPix folder that stays after uninstall. Without one of these, the items are gone.
Does offloading an app delete its data?
No. Apple says offloading frees the storage the app uses but keeps its documents and data. The icon stays with a cloud symbol, and a tap reinstalls the app. On Android 15 and up, Archive works the same way: it removes the app but keeps its data and icon.
Will I lose my Calculator Lock photos if I uninstall it?
Yes, unless you made a backup. The Calculator Lock App Store page says not to uninstall the app, or all your files will be lost. The same page offers iCloud and Google Drive backup and an app migration tool. Back up or export everything, then count the items, before you delete it.
Does deleting a vault app cancel my subscription?
No. A subscription runs through the App Store or Google Play, not through the app on your phone. Google says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Cancel in the store you bought from, with the account that paid.
