The Hidden album and iOS tools
Where is Recently Deleted on iPhone, and how long does it keep photos?

Recently Deleted is a collection in the iPhone Photos app, below Utilities in Collections. It keeps deleted photos and videos for 30 days, then removes them for good. In iOS 16 and later it opens with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. From there you can recover items to your library, or delete them permanently, a few at a time or all at once.
Recently Deleted is the most searched photo topic in our keyword study, with 2,209 Bing impressions in our US sample. Most people who search it want one of two things. They want a photo back, or they want it gone for good. This guide covers both, then the cleanup step after you move photos into any private app. We checked every step against Apple’s pages for iOS 27 on 2026-10-02. The steps are the same in iOS 18 and later.
Where is Recently Deleted on iPhone?
Open Photos, tap Collections, and scroll down to Utilities. Recently Deleted sits there with Hidden, Recovered and Duplicates. Tap it, tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. On iPad, you might need to tap the sidebar icon in the upper-left corner first to see your collections.
The lock is on by default in iOS 16 and later. It uses the same switch as the Hidden album: Settings, Apps, Photos, Use Face ID. If you turn that switch off, both collections open with no check. Leave it on if you share your phone or often hand it to someone else. Recently Deleted can hold the very photos you meant to remove.
How long does Recently Deleted keep photos?
30 days. Each deleted photo or video stays for 30 days from the day you delete it. After that, Photos removes it from your iPhone, from iCloud and from your other devices on the same Apple Account. During the 30 days you can recover it, or delete it early.
With iCloud Photos on, a delete is a delete everywhere. Apple says that when you delete a photo on one device, it is deleted on your other devices too.
Two kinds of delete surprise people:
- Merged duplicates. When you merge duplicates in the Duplicates collection, Apple keeps one copy and moves the others to Recently Deleted.
- Shared Library photos. In an iCloud Shared Photo Library, anyone can delete a photo. Apple says only the person who added it can recover it or delete it for good from Recently Deleted.
How to recover recently deleted photos on iPhone
- Open the Photos app, then tap Collections.
- Tap Recently Deleted below Utilities, tap View Album, then unlock with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
- Tap Select, then tap the photos and videos you want to recover.
- Tap the More button, then tap Recover. To recover everything, tap Recover All.
- Tap Recover to confirm. The items go back to your Library.
On a Mac with macOS Ventura or later, select Recently Deleted in the sidebar under Utilities. On iCloud.com, open Photos and select Recently Deleted in the sidebar.
Not in Recently Deleted?
Apple lists four other places to look before you give up.
- Recovered. If a photo did not save properly, Photos may keep a copy in Recovered, below Utilities. Tap it, then tap Restore to Library. Apple warns that a delete from Recovered is permanent.
- Hidden. A hidden photo shows only in the Hidden album. See our Hidden album guide.
- Shared Library. Some photos show only in certain library views.
- iCloud Photos. Make sure iCloud Photos is on, and that every device signs in to the same Apple Account.
Before you delete anything for good
Apple’s own advice before a delete is to back up the photos and videos you still want. If you use iCloud Photos, check that it has finished its upload first.
Open Photos and tap Collections. The top-right corner shows the sync status around your account icon. A partly filled blue circle means photos are still uploading. A yellow badge means sync is paused. A red exclamation mark means your iCloud storage is full. Tap your account icon to see the details and the time of the last sync.
Remember that iCloud Photos is a sync, not a separate copy. A delete on one device deletes on all of them. A second backup, such as a copy on a computer, is the only thing that survives a delete you regret after 30 days.
How to empty Recently Deleted on iPhone
- Open the Photos app, then tap Collections.
- Tap Recently Deleted below Utilities, tap View Album, then unlock.
- Tap Select, then tap the items you want to delete. To delete everything, you do not need to pick items.
- Tap the More button, then tap Delete, or Delete All.
- Tap Delete from All Devices to confirm. In a Shared Library, the button reads Delete Photos I Added.
Apple is direct about this step. In its words: “When you delete a photo or video from this album, you can’t get it back.” Check twice before step 5.
Sometimes the delete button is gray when you try to delete a photo from your library. The photo may have come from a computer sync. Apple says you cannot delete those on the iPhone. You need to stop syncing photos from the computer.
After you move photos into a vault: the cleanup step
This is the step most people miss when they move photos into a private app. Every vault app copies photos out of Photos. Some then delete the originals for you, and some ask you to. Either way, the originals go to Recently Deleted. They stay on your iPhone for 30 days, and in iCloud if iCloud Photos is on. They open with the same passcode as the Hidden album.
So the private photos you just moved are still in the most obvious place to look. Do the cleanup in this order:
- Check the copies first. Open the vault and count the items. Open several at full size and play each video.
- Delete the originals. If the app did not do it, select them in Photos and delete them.
- Empty those items from Recently Deleted. Use the steps above.
- Look on your other devices. With iCloud Photos, the delete follows your account. Without it, check each device.
Order matters. We read 836 App Store reviews of 7 vault apps. At least 7 users who lost photos in a vault had already deleted the originals from Photos. The vault copy was their only copy. A 1-star Keepsafe review (2024-10) describes the worst case: “when it does crash it doesn’t upload my photos to the app but it still deletes the photos from my albums”. If you empty Recently Deleted before you check the vault, a failed import becomes permanent loss.
What York Vault does
York Vault is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad and on Google Play for Android. Plus adds a Mac app, and Pro adds a web app. It:
- Offers to remove the originals from Photos only for items whose encrypted copy it has read back and checked. See import and cleanup.
- Shows a short guide after each removal. It has a button that opens Photos, and the steps to empty Recently Deleted.
- Keeps its own Trash for 30 days, free on every plan. Restoring from Trash never needs a paid plan.
- Backs up every item, encrypted, to your own iCloud, or Google Drive on Android, before you rely on it. See encrypted backup.
York Vault does not empty Recently Deleted for you. You do that step yourself, in Photos. To move a vault to a new phone later, read our transfer guide. To compare apps first, see the best photo vault apps for iPhone.

Questions people ask

How long do photos stay in Recently Deleted on iPhone?
30 days. Apple says deleted photos and videos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. After that they are permanently removed from your iPhone, from iCloud and from your other devices on the same Apple Account. You can recover or delete them at any time during those 30 days.
Can you recover photos after 30 days?
Apple says no. After 30 days in Recently Deleted, an item is permanently deleted and you cannot get it back from Photos. Before you give up, check the Hidden and Recovered collections and the Shared Library, because Apple lists those as places where a missing photo may be.

How do I unlock the Recently Deleted album?

Yes, if you use iCloud Photos. Apple's confirm button reads Delete from All Devices. The items leave your iPhone, iCloud and every other device signed in to the same Apple Account. You cannot undo this.
