Can you delete photos from your iPhone but keep them in iCloud?

Not one photo at a time while iCloud Photos is on. Apple says a photo you delete is deleted on all your devices. To save space, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage, which keeps smaller versions on the phone. To take the library off this iPhone, turn off Sync this iPhone and choose Remove from iPhone. New photos then stop syncing from this phone.
People ask this for two reasons. Some want space back on a full iPhone. Others want a photo off the phone that someone else looks at, but not lost. iCloud Photos treats your library as one thing on every device, so the answer depends on which of the two you want. This guide follows Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 and Apple’s support article on turning off iCloud Photos, checked on 2026-10-09.
Why one delete reaches every device
Apple’s guide says it plainly: “When you use iCloud photos, any photos you delete or hide are deleted or hidden on all your devices.” The Delete button removes a photo “from your iPhone and other devices where iCloud Photos is turned on and you’re signed in to the same Apple Account”. The photo then waits in Recently Deleted for 30 days before Apple removes it from your iPhone, iCloud and your other devices.
So with iCloud Photos on, there is no “delete from this iPhone only” button.
If you want space: Optimize iPhone Storage
- Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud.
- Tap Photos, then iPhone Storage.
- Choose Optimize iPhone Storage. The other choice, Download and Keep Originals, keeps full-size files on the phone.
Apple says that with Optimize iPhone Storage on, “all your full‑resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your iPhone”. Every photo still shows on the phone. Nothing is deleted.
If you want the library off this iPhone: turn off sync here
- Make sure everything has uploaded. Apple’s guide shows the sync status at the top right of the Photos library.
- Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud.
- Under Saved to iCloud, tap Photos.
- Turn off Sync this iPhone.
- Choose Remove from iPhone.
Apple says that after you turn off iCloud Photos on one device, “changes like uploads of new photos, edits, and deletions no longer sync between that device and other devices”. So new photos you take on this iPhone stay only on this iPhone until you turn sync back on. Apple also warns that a copy you do not download is an optimized version, “not the original resolution”.
If you want one photo off the phone and safe
Neither option moves a single photo out of sight. For that, the photo needs a second home first:
- Save a copy outside the library. Apple’s Export Unmodified Original saves it to a drive or a card. See how to back up iPhone photos without iCloud.
- Then delete it in Photos, knowing that this deletes it from iCloud and your other devices too.
- Empty it from Recently Deleted. See our Recently Deleted guide.
If you only want it out of view, hiding works across devices instead. Read are hidden photos saved to iCloud.
Remember the other devices
A shared iPad or a family Mac on the same Apple Account shows the same library. Removing photos from your iPhone does nothing there. See why your iPhone photos show on your kid’s iPad.
How York Vault fits
York Vault keeps its own encrypted copy of each photo you add, outside the Photos library. It backs that copy up, encrypted, to your own iCloud. Once York Vault has checked its copy, Remove from Photos deletes the original from Photos. With iCloud Photos on, that also removes it from iCloud and your other devices after Recently Deleted. The photo then lives only in York Vault. See how to remove originals from Photos safely. York Vault is on iPhone, iPad and Android. Download York Vault.

Questions people ask
If I delete a photo from my iPhone, is it deleted from iCloud?
Yes, when iCloud Photos is on. Apple says that with iCloud Photos, any photos you delete are deleted on all your devices. The photo stays in Recently Deleted for 30 days, then Apple says it is permanently removed from your iPhone, iCloud and your other devices.
How do I free up iPhone space without deleting photos from iCloud?
Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage. Open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos, then iPhone Storage. Apple says full-resolution originals then stay in iCloud and the iPhone keeps storage-saving versions. Your photos still appear on the phone, and the originals download when you need them.
How do I remove all photos from my iPhone but keep them in iCloud?
Turn off iCloud Photos for this iPhone only. Open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, tap Photos under Saved to iCloud, and turn off Sync this iPhone. Choose Remove from iPhone. Apple says changes like new photos and deletions then stop syncing between this iPhone and your other devices.
Can I delete a photo from iCloud but keep it on my iPhone?
Not while iCloud Photos is on, because one deletion applies everywhere. Save a copy outside the library first, for example to a drive with Export Unmodified Original, or move it into an app that stores its own copy. Then delete it from Photos.
