How does face down lock work in a photo vault app?

Face down to exit in York Vault on iPhone

Face down lock locks the vault when you turn the iPhone face down, then opens another app so the screen shows something ordinary. York Vault does this on the Free plan. After half a second face down, it locks and opens a target you pick, such as a Safari page, Messages, Music, Mail or Maps. It opens only one target per lock.

Why a fast way out matters

Most people do not need a vault against a stranger. They need it against a parent, a sibling, a partner or a child who walks up while the app is open. In the 836 App Store reviews we studied, 7 mention a face-down switch, and 6 of those praise it. A Keepsafe user wrote: “I love how if you turn your phone down you can have it switch to another app!” The 7th review reported a switch that opened “60+ tabs”.

What York Vault does

All of these are on the Free plan:

  • Face down lock. Lay the iPhone screen down, and York Vault locks and opens another app or web page.

  • Auto-lock. York Vault locks the moment it goes to the background, when a call comes in, and when the screen locks.

  • App switcher cover. The app switcher never shows your items.

  • Screen recording cover. While the screen is recorded, mirrored or sent over AirPlay, a plain cover replaces every item.

  • Shake to lock. A firm shake locks York Vault and opens your face down target. Walking and running do not set it off.

  • Cover the screen to exit. Cover the top of the iPhone for half a second, and York Vault locks and opens your target, the same as face down.

  • A lock button. Tap it in the library header, or press Command L on an iPad or Mac keyboard.

  • A blank TV or monitor. A connected screen shows a plain cover. Tap Show on TV to show your items there for that session only.

How face down lock works

  1. Open York Vault settings and turn on face down lock.
  2. Pick a target: a Safari page, Messages, Music, Mail, Maps, or any web link.
  3. Use York Vault as normal.
  4. When someone walks up, lay the iPhone flat with the screen down.
  5. After half a second, York Vault locks and opens your target.
  6. Pick up the phone. The screen shows the target. York Vault needs your code to open again.

The motion sensor counts each time the phone lies face down only once. A 3-second wait follows before the next one counts, and York Vault opens at most one target per lock. A test of 20 flips in a row must open at most one target per flip.

The first time York Vault opens another app, iOS may ask you to allow it. Allow it once during setup so the exit works when you need it.

Why there is no Home Screen target

Apple’s App Review Guidelines say “Apps may only use public APIs” (2.5.1). No public API sends the iPhone to the Home Screen. So York Vault opens an app or a page instead. Some apps list a Home Screen target. York Vault uses only public APIs, so a Home Screen target is not on its list.

The cover in the app switcher

When York Vault stops being the active app, a plain cover replaces the screen before iOS takes its preview picture. This happens when you open the app switcher, Control Center or Notification Center, and when a call comes in. The launch screen is the same plain cover. The cover matches your chosen icon, so nothing on screen says what the app holds.

SPV users reported the problem this avoids: “Every single album pops up for a split second without any passcode required.” (SPV, 3 stars, 2020-06)

Auto-lock and the grace period

By default, York Vault locks at once when you leave it. You can add a grace period of 30 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes, free. The app switcher cover still shows at once during a grace period. Keepsafe’s app text says “PIN Timeout is a Keepsafe Premium feature.”

Screen recording and screenshots

While the screen is recorded, mirrored or sent over AirPlay, York Vault replaces every item with the cover. After a screenshot, York Vault can lock at once, if you turn that on.

iOS has no public way to block a screenshot. Where iOS allows it, York Vault shows photos in a way that makes a screenshot come out black. A future iOS update may change that behavior.

On Android, York Vault blocks screenshots and screen recording outright, on every screen.

LockMyPix also offers a shake to lock. Its listing says “Simply shake your phone to lock your entire vault”. We read each App Store package in September 2026 and checked the listings on 2026-10-02.

Use it with the rest

A quick exit hides what is on screen. It does not stop a person who later opens the app and guesses codes. For that, pick a strong code in lock options, and turn on attempts to see wrong codes. For a lock screen that looks like a working calculator, turn on the calculator front. For Apple’s own tools, read how to hide photos on iPhone.

Questions people ask

What is face down lock in a photo vault app?

It is a setting that watches the iPhone's motion sensor. When you lay the phone screen down, the app locks itself and opens another app, such as Safari or Messages. When you pick the phone up, the screen shows that other app, not your photos.

Can a photo vault app go back to the Home Screen by itself?

Not with the tools Apple allows. Apple's App Review Guidelines say apps may only use public APIs, and no public API sends the iPhone to the Home Screen. So York Vault opens another app or a web page instead. Apps that offer a Home Screen target use other methods.

Will face down lock open many tabs if I flip the phone again and again?

Not in York Vault. Each time the phone lies face down counts once, with a 3-second wait before the next one, and York Vault opens at most one target per lock. One Keepsafe review reported a face-down switch that opened more than 60 tabs.

What does the app switcher show after I leave York Vault?

A plain cover in the style of your chosen icon. York Vault puts the cover in place before iOS takes its preview picture, so the app switcher never shows your items. The cover also appears when you open Control Center or Notification Center, or when a call comes in.

Does York Vault lock when a call comes in?

Yes. By default York Vault locks the moment it goes to the background, when a call comes in, and when the screen locks. You can add a grace period of 30 seconds, 1 minute or 5 minutes at no cost.
