The Hidden album and iOS tools
Can a computer see the photos I've hidden on my phone?

It can. The Hidden album is a setting inside Apple's Photos app, not a lock on the file. A Mac with iCloud Photos keeps hidden photos in a locked Hidden album, but a Windows PC that imports over a cable can show them. Any computer needs your passcode and a Trust tap first. Vault app files reach a computer only if the app shares them.
People find this out the hard way. They plug the iPhone into a laptop to free up space, and the photos they hid show up in the import window. Whether that happens depends on the computer, on iCloud Photos, and on one tap on the phone. We checked Apple’s support articles and Google’s Android Help on 2026-10-09.
Why the Hidden album does not travel with the file
Apple’s Hidden album article describes hiding as a view inside Photos. Hidden items “don’t appear anywhere else in Photos”. The file itself does not change. Apple’s own sync keeps the setting:
If you use iCloud Photos, the photos that you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too.
So any Apple device that reads your library through iCloud Photos respects the Hidden flag. Software that reads the files straight off the phone, such as an import into Windows, does not see that flag. An Apple Community thread from October 2024 shows the risk. A user connected an iPhone 15 on iOS 18.1 to a Windows 10 laptop by USB and “saw all of my hidden photos show up on computer”. Apple’s support pages do not describe this case either way.
What each kind of computer sees
| Computer | How it gets your photos | Hidden photos |
|---|---|---|
| Mac with iCloud Photos on | Sync through iCloud | Stay in the Hidden album, locked with Touch ID or the login password on macOS Ventura and later |
| Mac importing over a cable | The Photos Import screen | Apple does not say. Check the import screen before you hand over the Mac |
| Windows PC with the Apple Devices app | Import into Microsoft Photos | Can show, per the Apple Community report above |
On a Mac, Apple says the Hidden album is off by default in the sidebar. To show it, choose View, then Show Hidden Photo Album. Our guide to hiding photos on a Mac covers the Mac side in full.
The step that protects you: Trust This Computer
A computer cannot read your iPhone just because a cable connects them. Apple says you must unlock the iPhone with your passcode, then tap Trust on the phone. Apple is clear about what that allows:
Trusted computers can sync with your device and access your device’s photos, videos, contacts, and other content.
The trust stays until you change it or erase the iPhone. If you tap Don’t Trust, the computer gets no access. To remove every trusted computer:
- Open Settings and tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Reset.
- Tap Reset Location & Privacy.
A repair shop or a friend’s laptop is the usual place this matters. See phone repair privacy.
Computer backups hold your photos too
A backup made with the Finder or the Apple Devices app is a copy of your phone on that computer. Apple says local backups are not encrypted by default. To lock them, connect the iPhone, select it in the Finder or the Apple Devices app, and turn on Encrypt local backup with a password. Apple notes that encrypted backups also hold saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data and call history.
Vault apps and computers
A vault app’s files sit inside the app, out of reach of Photos. On iPhone, a computer sees an app’s files only if the app supports File Sharing. Apple says those apps show in the Files tab when you select the iPhone in the Finder. If no Files section shows, no app on the phone shares files.
Android is more open. Google’s steps for a cable transfer are short. Unlock the phone and connect it. Tap the Charging this device via USB notification, then choose File Transfer under Use USB for. A file window then opens on the computer. Some vault apps keep their files in a folder on shared storage. LockMyPix, for example, says its Android files sit in a folder named .LockMyPix at the root of storage. Whether those files open depends on the app’s encryption.
What York Vault does
- Nothing in Files, Finder or a cable transfer. York Vault keeps its library inside the app’s own storage and turns on no File Sharing.
- Not in device backups. York Vault leaves its library out of iCloud and computer backups of the phone, because its own encrypted backup covers it.
- Encrypted at rest. Each item, its name and its thumbnail are encrypted on the phone. A copied file is unreadable without your code.
- Originals removed after a check. After York Vault checks its copy, it offers to remove the originals from Photos, so the import window has nothing left to show. See import and cleanup.
York Vault is on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. If you are still weighing the built-in option, read Hidden album or photo vault app. Download York Vault.

Questions people ask
Can a computer see the photos I've hidden on my iPhone?
A Mac that syncs through iCloud Photos keeps them in the Hidden album, which macOS Ventura and later lock by default. A Windows PC that imports from the iPhone over a cable can show them. In an Apple Community thread from October 2024, a user saw all hidden photos on a Windows 10 PC.
Can someone plug my iPhone into a computer and see my photos?
Only after you unlock the iPhone and tap Trust. Apple says a trusted computer can sync with your device and access its photos, videos, contacts and other content. If you tap Don't Trust, the computer gets no access, and the alert shows each time you connect.
How do I stop trusting a computer?
Open Settings, tap General, tap Transfer or Reset iPhone, tap Reset, then tap Reset Location & Privacy. Apple says the iPhone then asks again the next time you connect to any computer you trusted before.
Can vault photos be viewed on a computer when the phone is plugged in?
It depends on the app. An iPhone app shows its files in the Finder or the Apple Devices app only if it supports File Sharing. On Android, some vault apps keep files in a folder on shared storage. York Vault shares nothing with Files, Finder or a cable connection.
Do hidden photos go into my computer backup?
A backup made with the Finder or the Apple Devices app is a copy of your iPhone on that computer. Apple says these local backups are not encrypted by default. Turn on Encrypt local backup, with a password, so the copy cannot be read without it.
