What is a calculator vault, and how does the secret calculator app work?

Calculator disguise in York Vault on iPhone

A calculator vault is a photo vault whose lock screen looks and works like a calculator. You type your code, then the equals key, and your private photos open. Any other sum gives a normal answer. York Vault has a working calculator front on the Free plan, and a calculator style icon to match it.

In York Vault now

York Vault has a working calculator front, free on every plan, on iPhone and Android. Pair it with the calculator style icon, and the app looks like a calculator from the Home Screen to the first screen.

Why people search for calculator vaults

Calculator vault searches show up in every market and every language we studied, from “calculatrice” to “계산기”. Two groups search for them. Some people want one for their own photos. Others, often parents or partners, want to know if one is on a phone they share. This page answers both.

How a calculator vault works

  1. The Home Screen shows a calculator icon.
  2. The app opens to a working calculator.
  3. You type your secret code on the keypad.
  4. You press the equals key, or another key the app chooses.
  5. The calculator gives way to the vault.

Calculator Lock’s App Store listing puts it this way: “Enter your password on hidden calculator photo vault and press ‘=’ button to open.” Privault’s lock uses a “Calculator Style” keypad, and the code ends with the percent key.

How York Vault’s calculator works

It is a calculator that holds up when someone uses it:

  1. Turn on the calculator front in York Vault settings.
  2. The lock screen becomes a real calculator, with basic and scientific keys, history, copy result and rotation.
  3. Any sum gives the right answer.
  4. Type your code on the keypad, then =. Your library opens on the first try.
  5. Anything else stays a calculation.

There is no ad, no splash screen and no flash of your library before the calculator appears.

One Calculator Lock user named the failure this avoids: “Has the calculator Lock Screen, but has to load an add first…no calc does this, so it’s just off/not a real feature” (2 stars, 2024-10).

Why it must be a real calculator

Apple’s App Review Guidelines reject “False information and features” (1.1.6). They also say “Don’t include any hidden, dormant, or undocumented features in your app” (2.3.1). So a calculator front must do real math. The app must also say in its App Store listing and its notes to Apple that a vault sits behind it.

Keepsafe learned this the hard way. Its app text says: “Updated Apple policy (sec. 1.1.6) has required us to remove Secret Door.” Secret Door was a fake front that looked like a timer or a security scanner. York Vault does not ship fronts that fake a function, such as a scan that scans nothing. The working calculator and neutral icons are the only disguises.

The name under the icon

iOS gives each app one Home Screen name, and an app cannot change it. LockMyPix’s app text admits this: “The app title cannot be changed due to iOS guidelines”. Calculator Lock’s App Store name is “Calculator Lock - Secure Vault”. One of its users wrote that the name “is a dead giveaway in our app list and folders”.

On iPhone and iPad, York Vault’s name under every icon is “YV”. It says nothing about a vault, but it is not “Calculator” either, so a person who reads the name can still wonder. On Android, each neutral icon carries its own home screen name, so the name under the calculator style icon changes with the icon.

On iPhone, a calculator icon helps against a glance at the Home Screen. It does not help against a person who reads the app list in Settings or App Library. On iOS 18 and later, Apple’s Hide and Require Face ID moves an App Store app into a locked Hidden folder. Our guide on how to hide apps on iPhone has the steps. Apple also lists every hidden app in Settings, under Apps, then Hidden Apps.

Calculator front or neutral icon

The two do different jobs, and they work together.

Calculator style icon Calculator front
Plan Free Free
What it changes The picture on the Home Screen The first screen when the app opens
Against a glance at the Home Screen Helps Helps
Against a person who opens the app No help. They see a code screen. Helps. They see a calculator that works.
Against a person who reads Settings No help No help

Use both for the best cover. Add a quick exit for the most common case: a person who walks up while the app is open.

If you forget the code

A calculator vault is only as safe as its way back in. Calculator Lock’s listing says: “You can enter “11223344=” for master reset your password by verifying your security question”. That code works for every user. York Vault uses a recovery key that only you hold instead.

Questions people ask

What is the secret calculator app?

It is a name for photo vault apps that look like a calculator. The icon and the first screen show a calculator. When you type a secret code and press the equals key, the app opens a store of hidden photos, videos or files. Calculator Lock and Privault are two examples on the App Store.

How to use hidden calculator app?

Open the app and you see a calculator. Type your code and press the equals key, or the key the app names, such as percent in Privault. The vault opens. Other sums work as normal. In York Vault, you turn on the calculator front in settings, and it opens with your code followed by equals.

How to find secret calculator app on iPhone?

Look at the names, not the icons. Swipe to App Library or open Settings, then Apps, and read the list. Many calculator vaults keep a name such as "Calculator Lock - Secure Vault". Apple also lists hidden apps in Settings, under Apps, then Hidden Apps.

What does secret calculator app look like?

On the Home Screen it shows a calculator icon, and the first screen is a working keypad with a display. The name under the icon often gives it away, because iOS lets an app have only one Home Screen name. Some apps also show an ad before the calculator, which a real calculator never does.

Secret calculator app forgot password: what now?

It depends on the app. Calculator Lock's listing says to type "11223344=" and answer a security question, which means anyone who reads the listing knows that code. York Vault uses a 12-word recovery key that only you hold instead. It opens your library and lets you set a new code.
