Situation

How do I stop strangers from sending me photos with AirDrop or Quick Share?

Set AirDrop to Contacts Only in Control Center, and keep Everyone for 10 Minutes for the moments you need it. Since iOS 26.2, a stranger also needs an AirDrop code from you. On Android, set Quick Share to Contacts or Your devices. Turn on Sensitive Content Warning on iPhone to blur nude images before you see them. Decline anything you did not expect.

You are on a train or in a lecture hall. A request pops up from a phone name you do not know. The preview is a photo you did not ask for. Or someone nearby keeps trying, and the requests keep coming. AirDrop on iPhone and Quick Share on Android both let nearby phones send you files. Both have settings that decide who can try. This page shows how to close that door, blur what gets through, and deal with a photo you already got. We checked each step against Apple’s, Google’s and Samsung’s own pages and UK law on 2026-10-08.

How a stranger reaches your phone

AirDrop works between Apple devices within about 30 feet (10 meters). Apple says “the recipient can accept or decline each transfer as it arrives.” Who can send you a request depends on one setting:

  • Contacts Only. Only people in your contacts can send to you.
  • Everyone for 10 Minutes. Anyone nearby can send for 10 minutes. Then it goes back to Contacts Only when you use an Apple Account, or to Receiving Off when you do not.

With iOS 26.2 and later, there is one more step. If someone who is not in your contacts tries to send you an item, Apple says “they must use an AirDrop code.” Your device shows the code. You decide whether to give it to them. A stranger on a train cannot send you a photo without it.

On Android, Quick Share does the same job. Google lists three choices under Who can share with you: Your devices, Contacts and Everyone for 10 minutes. Samsung Galaxy phones use No one, Contacts only and Anyone nearby.

Set AirDrop on iPhone

  1. Open Control Center.
  2. Touch and hold the top-left group of controls, then tap the AirDrop button.
  3. Tap Contacts Only.

Use Everyone for 10 Minutes only when you need to receive from someone new, then let it lapse. If you shared files with a person through an AirDrop code, you can keep sharing with them for 30 days. To end that sooner, open Contacts, find them in your Other Known list, then select Forget This Person.

On a Mac, open Control Center in the menu bar, click the arrow next to AirDrop, then click Contacts Only.

Blur nude images before you see them

Apple’s Sensitive Content Warning checks photos and videos for nudity before you see them.

  1. Go to Settings, then Privacy & Security.
  2. Tap Sensitive Content Warning, then turn it on.

On iPhone and iPad, it covers AirDrop, Messages, FaceTime calls and video messages, Contact Posters and shared photo albums. A flagged image arrives blurred. You can tap Show, find safety resources, or block the person. Apple says the check runs on your device, and “Apple doesn’t receive an indication that sensitive content was detected.”

Set Quick Share on Android

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Search for Quick Share.
  3. Tap Who can share with you, then choose Contacts or Your devices.

Google adds a detail about Receive mode on the Quick Share page. There, your phone “is visible to anyone nearby when you’re on that screen.” Leave that screen when you are done. On a Samsung phone, set Who can share with you to No one or Contacts only. Our guide to locking photos on Android covers the gallery side.

If a photo already came through

You declined it. Nothing was saved. Change your setting so it does not happen again.

You accepted it. Apple says a photo sent from the Photos app is saved in Photos on your device. Some files go to the Files app instead. On Android, Quick Share files go to the Downloads folder, in Quick Share.

  • To remove it, delete it, then empty it from Recently Deleted, where iOS keeps deleted items for 30 days. Our Recently Deleted guide shows how.
  • To report it, keep it first. Write down the time, the place and the sender’s device name. In England and Wales, section 66A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 covers this. Sending a photo of genitals to cause “alarm, distress or humiliation” is an offence. Laws differ elsewhere, so ask the local police what they need.

A photo kept as evidence does not have to sit in your camera roll. There it can come up in memories, widgets and screen shares. Our page on screen sharing on a call shows how fast a photo grid ends up on someone else’s screen.

Where York Vault fits

York Vault cannot block an AirDrop or Quick Share request. Those settings belong to iOS and Android. It helps with what comes after.

Add to York Vault from the share sheet: 6 photos, added to the Inbox or an album
  • Keep a record out of sight. Add the photo to York Vault, then remove the original from Photos or your gallery. York Vault removes an original only after it checks its copy. The import and cleanup page shows the steps, and the item keeps its original date.
  • Find what else is in your camera roll. The sensitive photo scan groups IDs, documents, private screenshots and intimate photos. It runs on the phone, and you pick what to move.
  • Send without AirDrop. To give someone a photo without opening your phone to Everyone, use a private share link. It expires after a set time or number of opens, and you can revoke it.

York Vault works the same on iPhone and Android. Download York Vault to try it. For the built-in options, read how to hide photos on iPhone.

Questions people ask

Can a stranger AirDrop me a photo?

Only if your AirDrop is set to Everyone for 10 Minutes, and you still choose. Apple says the recipient can accept or decline each transfer as it arrives. With iOS 26.2 or later, a sender who is not in your contacts also needs an AirDrop code that your device shows, so nothing arrives unless you share that code.

How long does Everyone for 10 Minutes last?

Ten minutes. Apple says that after 10 minutes the setting changes back to Contacts Only if you are signed in to your Apple Account, or to Receiving Off if you are not. Set it again when you need to receive from someone new, then let it lapse.

Does Sensitive Content Warning work with AirDrop?

Yes. On iPhone and iPad, Apple lists AirDrop with Messages, FaceTime, Contact Posters and shared albums. If a photo or video might contain nudity, iOS blurs it before you see it and offers Show, safety resources and a block option. Apple says the check runs on your device and Apple gets no notice.

Where does an AirDrop photo go if I accept it?

A photo sent from Photos is saved in Photos on your device, and some files go to the Files app. If you decline, nothing is saved. If you accepted something by mistake, delete it in Photos, then delete it again from Recently Deleted, where iOS keeps deleted items for 30 days.

Is it a crime to send someone an unwanted nude photo?

In England and Wales, yes. Section 66A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003, added by the Online Safety Act 2023 from 31 January 2024, makes it an offence to send a photo or film of genitals to cause alarm, distress or humiliation. Laws differ by country and state, so ask the local police.
