Hidden album or photo vault app, which keeps photos more private?

The Hidden album is free, built into Photos and locked by default, but it opens with your iPhone passcode or Face ID, so anyone who knows the passcode can see it. A photo vault app adds a code of its own, and often a decoy code and break-in photos. In exchange, you trust another company with your backup, and most free vault apps show ads.

Which one suits you
The Hidden album suits people who mainly want photos out of the main library, trust everyone who knows their iPhone passcode, and want no extra app or cost. A photo vault app suits people who share their passcode or their iPhone, need a separate code, a decoy or break-in photos, and will check how the app backs up before they rely on it.
Every iPhone already has a place to put photos out of sight: the Hidden album in Photos. Photo vault apps sell a stronger version of the same idea. The right choice depends on one question more than any other: who knows your iPhone passcode?
What the Hidden album does
When you hide a photo, Photos moves it to the Hidden album. Apple says hidden items do not appear anywhere else in Photos. They leave the library, the other albums and the Photos widget on the Home Screen.
To hide a photo, open it in Photos, tap the More button, then tap Hide. You can also touch and hold a photo, tap Hide, then confirm. In iOS 26 and later, open Photos, tap Collections, and tap Hidden below Utilities to find the album. Then tap View Album and open it with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
Apple locks the Hidden album by default, starting with iOS 16. The current guide locks Recently Deleted the same way. In iOS 18 and later, you can turn the lock off in Settings, Apps, Photos with the Use Face ID, Use Touch ID or Use Passcode switch. In iOS 26 and later, Show Hidden Album in the same place removes the album from view in Photos. Both steps come from Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27.

Where the Hidden album falls short
The Hidden album has one lock, and it is your iPhone’s lock. Apple’s guide says you open the collection “using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode”. So:
- Anyone who knows your passcode can open it. A partner, a parent or a child who knows the code can tap View Album and see everything.
- Turning off Show Hidden Album is a curtain, not a lock. The switch is in Settings, so a person who can get into your iPhone can turn it back on.
- There is no second code. You cannot set a password for one album, and there is no decoy that opens a harmless set of photos.
Encryption is a separate question. Apple describes the Hidden album as locked, not as a separate store with its own key. In iCloud, standard data protection is the default, and Apple holds the keys “so we can help you with data recovery”. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection, Apple lists Photos among the data it end-to-end encrypts. If you use iCloud Photos, a photo you hide on one device is hidden on your other devices too.
What a photo vault app adds
A vault app keeps photos inside its own storage, behind its own code. The common features:
- A separate code. A PIN, pattern or password that is not your iPhone passcode. Many apps add Face ID on top.
- Album passwords. A second code for one album, for example in Private Photo Vault.
- A decoy code. A second code that opens a harmless set of photos. Keepsafe sells this as Fake PIN, a Premium feature.
- Break-in photos. The front camera takes a photo after a wrong code.
- Removal from Photos. After import, most apps offer to delete the originals from Photos. iOS then keeps those originals in Recently Deleted for 30 days. You need to empty it too. Our Recently Deleted guide shows how.
What a vault app costs you
A vault app moves the risk rather than removing it.
- You trust a company with your photos. If the app backs up to its own servers, check how it encrypts them and who holds the key.
- The app can lose your photos. On iPhone, deleting a vault app deletes the files inside it unless you backed them up. LockMyPix says this directly. Private Photo Vault’s App Store page says its free version does not back up to Cloud Vault.
- Recovery can be a back door. Some apps reset a forgotten code by email. Keepsafe sends an access code to your verified email after a 5-minute wait. That helps you, and it also helps anyone who can open your email.
- Free tiers carry ads and tracking. Keepsafe’s page says “Keepsafe Basic is ad supported”. Many vault apps list data used for tracking on their App Store privacy labels.
- The app is visible. Its icon sits on the Home Screen. iOS does not let an app change the name under its icon.
What users say
We read 836 App Store reviews of 7 vault apps. At least 15 compare a paid vault with free tools such as the Hidden album. Opinions split. A 1-star Private Photo Vault review from August 2026 reports lost data and advises: “Just use Apple’s Hidden Photos album (requires Face ID)”. A 5-star review of the same app from the same month says: “Way better than using the hidden folder. Been a user for 6 years”. Lost photos were the top complaint across all vault apps, in 136 of 836 reviews.
Using both
The two options do not exclude each other. Some people keep everyday private photos in the Hidden album and move only the most sensitive ones into a vault app. If you do this, remember that a photo you add to a vault app is a copy. The original stays in Photos, hidden or not, until you delete it and empty Recently Deleted.
Which one to choose
Choose the Hidden album if nobody else knows your iPhone passcode and you want no extra app. It works best when you mainly need photos out of the main library and the widget.
Choose a photo vault app if someone else knows your passcode or uses your iPhone, or you need a decoy or album passwords. Before you trust it, check 3 things. Does it back up every item? How do you get back in if you forget the code? What does its App Store privacy label say? Our guide to password protecting photos on iPhone and our list of the best photo vault apps for iPhone can help.
A third option: York Vault
York Vault is our own vault app for iPhone, iPad and Android, on the App Store and Google Play. Plus adds a Mac app, and Pro adds a web app. It has a code of its own and a 12-word recovery key instead of an email reset. Its free encrypted backup goes to your own iCloud, or to Google Drive on Android. Download York Vault on the App Store or Google Play.

Questions people ask
Is the Hidden album on iPhone safe?
It is safe from a quick scroll. Hidden items do not appear in the library or other albums, and since iOS 16 the album needs Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode to open. It is not safe from a person who knows your iPhone passcode, because that passcode opens it.
Is the iPhone Hidden album encrypted?
Apple describes the Hidden album as locked, not as a separate encrypted store with its own key. In iCloud, Photos uses standard data protection by default, where Apple holds the keys. If you turn on Advanced Data Protection, Apple lists Photos among the data that is end-to-end encrypted.
Will the Hidden album sync to my other devices?
Yes, if you use iCloud Photos. Apple says that photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices too. They stay in the Hidden album on each device and need that device's Face ID, Touch ID or passcode to view.
Can you password protect photos on iPhone?
Not with a password of their own in Photos. The Hidden album uses your iPhone's Face ID, Touch ID or passcode. For a separate password, a separate code per album or a decoy code, you need a photo vault app from the App Store.
Can someone see my hidden photos if they know my passcode?
Yes. Apple's lock on the Hidden album accepts the iPhone passcode. Anyone who knows it can open Photos, tap Hidden under Utilities and view the album. You can turn off Show Hidden Album, but a person who can get into your iPhone can turn it back on in Settings.
