Situation
Why did my photo widget show a private photo, and how do I stop it?

The Photos widget, Lock Screen Photo Shuffle and StandBy choose photos from your whole library unless you change them. On iPhone, hide the photo, then turn off Show Featured Content in Photos or feature that person less. On Android, remove the widget or move the photo to Google Photos Locked Folder. A photo kept outside the photo library cannot show up at all.
You put your phone on the table. The widget on the home screen rolls to a photo that you never meant anyone else to see. Or a friend picks up your phone on its charger and StandBy shows a slideshow from last weekend. Nothing went wrong with the phone. It did what its settings tell it to do. This page shows where your phone picks photos by itself. It also shows how to keep private ones off those screens. We checked each step against Apple’s and Google’s own pages on 2026-10-08.
Where your phone shows photos by itself
On iPhone, the Photos app picks photos for you in several places. None of them needs you to open the app.
- The Photos widget. It shows featured photos on the Home Screen and in Today View. Apple says you can set Photos to show certain people, days and holidays “less frequently or not at all in your memories, featured photos, and the Photos widget”.
- Photo Shuffle on the Lock Screen. This wallpaper changes photos on a schedule you set. It shows on the Lock Screen, before anyone types a passcode.
- StandBy. When the iPhone charges on its side, StandBy can act as a photo frame. Apple’s guide says you can set it up “for family photos in the kitchen”.
- Wallpaper suggestions. In Photos, under Collections, Apple offers wallpapers that “stylize photos of your favorite people and pets”.
All four draw from your photo library. The widget and the Lock Screen are the two that anyone near the phone can see. Our guide to hiding photos on iPhone covers the built-in options in more depth.
How to keep a photo off the iPhone widget
Start with the photo that showed up, then decide how much else to change.
- Hide the photo. In Photos, touch and hold the photo, tap Hide, then confirm. Apple says hidden photos do not appear “anywhere else in Photos, like the Library, other albums, or even the Photos widget on your Home Screen.” See our Hidden album guide for what that album does and does not protect.
- Feature a person less. Open a photo of the person, tap the More button, then tap Don’t Feature a Person. Choose Feature This Person Less or Never Feature This Person, then tap Confirm.
- Turn off featured content. In Photos, tap Collections, then tap your account in the top-right corner. Turn off Show Featured Content. Apple says this stops Photos from making featured photos and memories, in the app and in the widget.
- Edit or remove the widget. Touch and hold the widget and tap Edit Widget to see its options. If it sits in a Smart Stack, tap Edit Stack and remove the Photos widget from the stack.
If you use iCloud Photos, a photo you hide on your iPhone is hidden on your iPad and Mac too. That matters if a family iPad shows the same widget.
Photo Shuffle, StandBy and the Lock Screen
Photo Shuffle has its own photo selection, separate from the widget.
- Press the side button twice, then touch and hold the Lock Screen.
- Swipe to the Photo Shuffle screen and tap Customize.
- Tap the photo thumbnail to change the photo selection. Use the frequency button next to it to change how often the photos shuffle.
For StandBy, swipe left or right to move between widgets, photos and clocks. StandBy remembers your view in each place where you charge with MagSafe. A nightstand set to photos stays on photos. Pick a clock there if other people pass by.
If you share your phone often, a Lock Screen with a plain wallpaper is the safest choice. You can make more than one Lock Screen and link one to a Focus, such as Work.
On Android
Android phones do not share one photo widget. Your launcher, Google Photos and the phone maker each add their own. The controls differ, but two steps work on most phones.
- Remove the widget. Touch and hold the widget, drag it up to Remove, then lift your finger. Google notes that “Remove” takes an item off your Home screen only.
- Move the photo to Locked Folder. In Google Photos, move the photo into Locked Folder. Google says items there “won’t appear in the Photos grid, memories, search or albums.” Our Locked Folder guide shows the setup and the backup switch.
Google Photos also shows featured memories above the photo grid. Our page on memories that show private photos covers how to hide people, dates and single photos there.
Why hiding is not the same as private
The Hidden album and Locked Folder keep a photo off the widget. They do not give it a second lock. On iPhone, the Hidden album opens with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode. On Android, Google says “people who have access to the device screen lock can unlock Locked Folder.” If someone knows your passcode, read what to do when someone knows your passcode.
A photo vault app solves both problems at once, if it stores photos outside the photo library. The widget, Photo Shuffle and StandBy can only pick from Photos. A photo that is not in Photos never comes up.
Where York Vault fits
York Vault keeps your items in its own encrypted storage, on iPhone and Android. They are not in Apple Photos or the Android gallery. So no system widget, Lock Screen or memory can choose them. Photos you take with the York Vault camera never go to Photos at all.

York Vault has its own home screen widget, and it is off until you turn it on. It shows no photo, no count and no album name. Its label matches the icon you chose. The widgets and shortcuts page shows what each one does, and disguise icons explains the home screen names.
After you add photos to York Vault, the originals stay in Photos, and Photos can still feature them. York Vault offers to remove each original after it checks the copy. Then the original sits in Recently Deleted for 30 days, which our Recently Deleted guide helps you empty. The import and cleanup page walks through each step.
To try it, download York Vault for iPhone or Android.
Questions people ask
How does the iPhone choose photos for the Photos widget?
The Photos widget shows featured photos that the Photos app picks from your whole library by itself. Apple's guide groups the widget with memories and featured photos, and one switch, Show Featured Content, turns all of them off. A photo in the Hidden album does not appear in the widget.
Can I remove one photo from the Photos widget?
The surest way is to hide that photo. Apple says hidden photos do not appear anywhere else in Photos, including the Photos widget on your Home Screen. If the photo shows a person you would rather not see, use Feature This Person Less or Never Feature This Person from a photo of them.
How do I change the photos in Photo Shuffle?
Press the side button twice and touch and hold the Lock Screen. Swipe to the Photo Shuffle screen and tap Customize. Tap the photo thumbnail to change the photo selection, and use the frequency button to set how often it shuffles. A plain wallpaper is safer if other people often see your phone.
Does the York Vault widget show photos?
No. The York Vault widget shows no photo, no count and no album name, and it is off until you turn it on. Its label matches the icon you chose for York Vault. Items in York Vault are not in your photo library, so the Photos widget and Photo Shuffle cannot pick them.
Do hidden photos show up in the widget on my other devices?
Not if you use iCloud Photos. Apple says a photo you hide on one device is hidden on your other devices too. So hiding a photo on your iPhone also keeps it off the Photos widget on an iPad that signs in to the same Apple Account.
