How do I keep body progress photos private?

Take them outside the main camera roll, or move them out after each shot. In Photos they sync to every device on your account, can show up in memories and widgets, and sit next to the photos you show friends. Keep them in a separate album with its own code, and keep the dates, so you can still compare week to week.

Every Monday you take the same photo in the same mirror. It is the most honest record of the work you put in, whether that is training, weight loss, recovery after surgery or a change you started for yourself. It is also a photo you do not want to see pop up when you show someone your holiday. This page shows where progress photos go by default and how to keep them private without losing the record. We checked each fact against Apple’s and Google’s own pages on 2026-10-08.

Where progress photos end up

A photo from the phone’s camera goes to Photos or Google Photos, and from there it spreads:

Quick fixes in the photos app

If you want to keep progress photos in Photos, a few settings help:

  1. Feature them less. On iPhone, open Collections, touch and hold a memory made of progress photos, and tap Feature Less. To stop memories and featured photos everywhere, tap your account in Collections and turn off Show Featured Content. Apple says this stops Photos “from automatically generating featured photos and memories.”
  2. Hide them. Touch and hold a photo and tap Hide. Apple says hidden photos “don’t appear anywhere else in Photos, like the Library, other albums, or even the Photos widget.” The Hidden album is locked by default since iOS 16.
  3. On Android, use the Locked Folder. Google says its items “won’t appear in the Photos grid, memories, search or albums.” It opens with your screen lock.

The catch is the same for both. The Hidden album opens with Face ID, Touch ID or the passcode, and the Locked Folder with the screen lock. Our Hidden album guide and Locked Folder guide cover the details.

A progress album with its own code

York Vault keeps progress photos in a separate, encrypted library on iPhone and Android, behind a code that is not your phone passcode.

The York Vault camera with video, photo and scan modes, and a label that photos save to an album
The York Vault camera saves into the album, not the camera roll.

Take the photos straight into the album. Open the album in York Vault and use the private camera. It takes photos and video up to 4K and encrypts each photo in memory before it writes anything. Nothing goes to Photos or Google Photos, so nothing syncs, and nothing shows up in a memory.

Keep the dates. York Vault keeps each photo’s capture date, location and camera data inside its encrypted record. It sorts by the original capture date, never the time you added it. So photos you move from your camera roll stay in the right order.

Give the album its own code. An album code gives one album its own key. With your library open, that album still shows a blurred cover and no item count until you type its code. Pick a plain colour cover if you want nothing on screen at all. See albums.

Look back fast. Search by date range finds the photos from a month or a season. The viewer plays a slideshow, so you can flip through a year in order.

Move the old ones. Add earlier progress photos from your camera roll. York Vault checks each copy, then offers to remove the originals from Photos. Then empty Recently Deleted. The import and cleanup page shows each step.

The backup goes to your own iCloud or Google Drive, encrypted, with random names. iCloud and Google see no file names, types or dates.

Sharing with a coach or doctor

If you send progress photos to a coach, a trainer or a clinic, you send a copy that they keep. Two things help:

  • Remove the location. When you share from York Vault, it removes location and camera details by default. That matters if your mirror is at home. See share files safely.
  • Use a link that ends. A York Vault private share link expires on its own. On Free it lasts 7 days or 3 opens, with saving off and screenshot protection on. With Plus you choose the limits and can revoke it.

Progress photos that are also intimate photos need a little more care. Our page on where to keep intimate photos covers that.

Questions people ask

Will my progress photos show up in Memories?

They can. iPhone Memories and Google Photos memories pick photos from your whole library. On iPhone you can tap Feature Less on a memory, or turn off Show Featured Content. Photos in the Hidden album, the Locked Folder or York Vault stay out of memories.

Do progress photos sync to my iPad or laptop?

Yes, if iCloud Photos or Google Photos backup is on. Apple says iCloud Photos lets you reach your library from any device, and changes on one device change on the others. A photo you take at the gym mirror can show up on a family iPad or a work laptop signed in to your account.

Can I keep the dates when I move progress photos?

In York Vault, yes. It keeps each photo's capture date, location and camera data inside the encrypted record, and sorts by the original capture date, never the import time. So a progress album stays in order after you move it out of Photos.

Is the Hidden album enough for progress photos?

It keeps them out of the main grid, memories and the Photos widget. But it opens with Face ID, Touch ID or the phone passcode, and with iCloud Photos on it syncs to your other devices. If someone close to you knows your passcode, use a place with its own code.
