Resize an image
Add images and set the new size: a width and height in pixels, a percentage, or a print size in inches or centimeters at the dpi you need. With both a width and a height, the image fits inside them or fills them with a center crop. The tool keeps the colors, removes the metadata, and does not upload anything.

How it works
- Open. Your browser opens each image and turns phone photos the right way up. For HEIC in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, the page loads an open source HEIC decoder from yorkvault.com.
- Work out the size. A percentage scales both sides. A width or a height alone keeps the proportions. With both, Fit inside makes the image as large as fits, and Crop to fill cuts the long side around the center. A print size becomes pixels: inches times dpi.
- Draw. To make an image smaller, the tool halves it step by step until it is close to the new size, then draws the last step with the browser's high quality smoothing. Each pixel averages the pixels it replaces, so detail does not break up into jagged lines.
- Save. The browser writes the new file. It has no EXIF, XMP or IPTC data, and it keeps the color profile. For a print size, the tool writes the dpi into the JPEG or PNG file.
Pixels for common print sizes at 300 dpi
| Pixels | |
|---|---|
| 2 x 2 in (US passport) | 600 x 600 |
| 4 x 6 in | 1200 x 1800 |
| 5 x 7 in | 1500 x 2100 |
| 8 x 10 in | 2400 x 3000 |
| A4, 21 x 29.7 cm | 2480 x 3508 |
To make a file fit a size limit instead, use the image compressor. For a passport or visa photo with head guides, use the passport photo maker.
Questions people ask
Does this tool upload my images?
No. Your browser opens each image and draws the new size on your device. No image or file name goes to our server or to anyone else. To check, load this page, turn off Wi-Fi, and resize a JPEG or PNG. The tool still works.
How do I resize an image to 1080 x 1080 for Instagram?
Choose Pixels, type 1080 in Width and 1080 in Height, and choose Crop to fill. The tool cuts the long side around the center and makes a square photo. Instagram's help page says it uploads photos at up to 1080 x 1080 pixels. A larger photo gets smaller when you post it.
Does resizing lower the quality?
Making an image smaller keeps it sharp. The tool halves the size step by step and averages the pixels, so fine lines and text do not break up. Making an image larger cannot add detail that the original does not have, so it looks softer up close. JPEG and WebP also compress the picture when they save it. At 92%, you cannot see it at normal size.
How many pixels do I need to print a photo?
Multiply the print size in inches by the dpi. A 4 x 6 in print at 300 dpi needs 1200 x 1800 pixels. An 8 x 10 in print at 300 dpi needs 2400 x 3000 pixels. Choose Print size, type the size and the dpi, and the tool works out the pixels. It also writes the dpi into JPEG and PNG files, so the print app shows the right size.
What is the difference between resizing and compressing?
Resizing changes how many pixels the image has, for example from 4032 x 3024 to 1600 x 1200. That also makes the file smaller. Compressing keeps the pixels and stores them in fewer bytes. To make a file fit a size limit, such as 100 KB, use the image compressor on this site.
Does the resized image keep the location and camera data?
No. The new file has no EXIF, XMP or IPTC data, so it holds no location, date, camera model or serial number. It keeps the color profile, so a Display P3 photo from an iPhone keeps its colors.
