What is Private Photo Vault?
Private Photo Vault is the oldest large photo vault on the App Store. It arrived in February 2011, and it has more than 1 million US ratings. On Google Play it lists more than 10 million installs. You import photos and videos, and the app keeps them behind its own PIN, password or pattern, apart from your Photos library. It runs on iPhone, iPad and Android, and you can use the vault on the phone with no account.
The model is freemium. Basic is free and shows ads. Premium adds Cloud Vault backup and sync, Space Saver and Trash recovery. Ultimate adds more cloud space and extra tools.
How Private Photo Vault protects your photos
The company says “Your local files are AES encrypted” and that its team cannot view the photos or videos in your vault. Its site does not say how the key for local files is made or where it is kept.
Cloud Vault is clearer. It adds AES-256 on the phone before upload, with a key made from a Cloud Vault password that is “never uploaded to our servers.” The site calls this zero-knowledge, and says the team “cannot decrypt or view” your backups. The price of that design is that a lost Cloud Vault password cannot be recovered.
After too many wrong codes, the app locks for a while before you can try again. That slows down someone who guesses.
Lock, forgotten PIN and decoy
You pick a PIN, a password or a pattern. Face ID or Touch ID can open the vault, and Dual Lock asks for Face ID and the PIN together. Albums can have their own passwords.
If you forget the app password, you need the recovery email that you set up earlier. The FAQ says to enter the password wrong 8 times in a row and choose Yes at the prompt. Without that email, the password “cannot be recovered through this process.” Our read of the app package also found an offer to “e-mail yourself a backup of your PIN”, with the text “Your pin is: “. So anyone who can read that email can open the vault.
The Decoy Password opens an alternate vault with a different set of photos. The Break-in Report takes a photo with the front camera and records GPS after a wrong code. The app’s text offers it as a 7-day trial, then a paid feature. Face Down Lock switches to Safari, Messages or Music when you put the phone down. A Location-Based Lock opens only at trusted places. The site warns that a custom icon “does not make the installation undetectable.”
Backup and moving to a new phone
The free version has no cloud backup. The listing says so in plain words: “The free version of the app does not backup your files to Cloud Vault.” The FAQ adds that deleting the app “removes the photos and videos stored in it from your phone.”
Cloud Vault backs up and syncs between iPhone and Android on Premium. On a new phone you sign in to Cloud Vault and enter its password. A computer backup of the iPhone is the other route. The FAQ says some customers had problems restoring vault data from iCloud device backups.
Two rules matter. If Premium ends and you switch to Basic, “your Cloud Backup will be deleted.” And with Space Saver on, originals live in Cloud Vault and the phone keeps smaller copies, so you must download everything before you leave.
Price and plans
Prices on the US App Store, checked October 8, 2026:
- Private Photo Vault Premium: $6.99, listed 3 times
- Private Photo Vault Premium: $12.99, listed 2 times
- Private Photo Vault Premium: $35.99, listed 2 times
- Private Photo Vault Premium: $39.99, listed 2 times
- Private Photo Vault Upgrade: $39.99
The store does not name the periods. In the app, Premium includes 100 GB of Cloud Vault, and Ultimate includes 1,000 GB plus sub albums and duplicate detection. The app’s text also offers a one-time Remove Ads purchase. Older buyers of the one-time Pro keep it, but it is no longer for sale.
Privacy label and ads
Basic shows ads. The App Store label lists Usage Data under “Data Used to Track You”. Under “Data Linked to You” it lists Purchases, User Content, Identifiers, Usage Data and Diagnostics. Our read of the app package found AppLovin with about 10 ad networks, AppsFlyer, the Facebook SDK, Mixpanel and Firebase.
None of this says that the company looks at your photos. It says the free app runs an ad business, which is fair to weigh when you choose a privacy app.
What users report
We read 100 Private Photo Vault reviews, 50 from Australia and 50 from Canada, from 2017 to 2026. 63 are from 2025 or later. The sample has no US reviews and leans positive: 73 give 5 stars. Read the counts as signals, not rates.
- Organization and viewer requests: 10 reviews, such as albums inside albums.
- Lost photos: 9 reviews, most after a new phone, a reinstall or a lockout. One user wrote: “only to discover after reinstalling this app….ALL my photos disappeared!” (1 star, July 2026)
- Ads: 7 reviews, some from paying users. One called it “unfair and poor form to inflict them on long term existing subscribers.”
- Locked out after a forgotten PIN: 6 reviews.
- Support: 5 reviews. One says a ticket was opened, then “zero action” followed (1 star, July 2026).
- A backup tied to a plan: “Unless I buy a subscription all will be erased.” (1 star, September 2026)
What Private Photo Vault does well
Private Photo Vault was the most praised app in our study. 13 reviews praise years of use across phones and iPads: “Never has let me down. On 4th phone with app. So easy transfer” (5 stars, September 2026). 10 praise how easy it is: “I tried a couple others before this and had problems even using them.” It has a deep set of safety tools: a decoy, break-in photos with GPS, album passwords, Dual Lock and a location lock. Its Cloud Vault is zero-knowledge and syncs iPhone and Android. Wi-Fi Transfer, a photo and video editor and a private browser are part of the app.
York Vault as an alternative
York Vault is our own app, so read this part with that in mind. It needs no account. Each item is encrypted on your phone with its own key (AES-256-GCM), and we cannot open your files. A 12-word recovery key replaces the email reset. Backup of every item to your own iCloud, or Google Drive on Android, is free and does not end with a plan. The cover code, the erase code, wrong-code photos and Trash recovery are free too, and there are no ads. Download York Vault on the App Store or Google Play.
Who it fits
Private Photo Vault fits people who want a proven, easy vault with a decoy, break-in photos and many extras, and who will pay for Cloud Vault and keep paying. It does not fit people who want a free backup, no ads, or a reset that does not run through email. On the free plan, keep a second copy of everything.

Questions people ask
Is Private Photo Vault safe?
Private Photo Vault says it encrypts local files with AES, and its Premium Cloud Vault is zero-knowledge, with a password that is never sent to its servers. It has more than 1 million US ratings at 4.8. The weak points are the free plan, which has no cloud backup, and a PIN reset that runs through email.
Can Private Photo Vault see my photos?
The company says its team cannot view the photos or videos in your vault. With Cloud Vault on, files are encrypted on your phone with a key from your Cloud Vault password before upload. With Cloud Vault off, the files stay on your phone. Its FAQ says iCloud device backups may also hold copies of the encrypted files.
What is the difference between Private Photo Vault Premium and Ultimate?
Both are subscriptions. In the app, Premium includes 100 GB of Cloud Vault backup. Ultimate includes 1,000 GB, plus sub albums, duplicate detection and advanced security features such as the location lock. The US App Store lists 10 purchases from $6.99 to $39.99 (checked October 8, 2026).
Is Private Photo Vault free?
Yes. Basic is free and shows ads. It locks photos behind a PIN and keeps them on your phone. The app's text says the free version is limited to 3 albums. Cloud Vault backup, Trash recovery and Space Saver are Premium, and the Break-in Report is paid after a 7-day trial.
What happens to my photos if I delete Private Photo Vault?
The FAQ says deleting the app removes the photos and videos stored in it from your phone. You can get them back only from a finished Cloud Vault backup or a computer backup of the phone. Without one, the company cannot restore them. Export to Photos before you delete the app or change phones.
