How do I use the York Vault web app?

Before you start

The web app needs three things:

• A Pro or Family plan.
• Your items in York Cloud, the Pro storage that we run. We hold only encrypted data and no key.
• York Vault on your iPhone or Android phone, open with your code.

It works in a current browser on any computer: a Mac, a Windows PC or a Chromebook. Nothing installs on the computer.

Plus does not include the web app. Plus keeps your items in your own iCloud or Google Drive, and the web app reads only York Cloud. On a Mac, Plus includes the Mac app.

Open your library in a browser

1. On the computer, go to app.yorkvault.com. The page shows a QR code.
2. On your phone, open York Vault with your code.
3. Scan the QR code with York Vault.
4. Your phone sends the keys for this session to the browser over an end-to-end encrypted channel.
5. The browser downloads your items from York Cloud and decrypts them in the page.

The web app shows only the library that was open on your phone when you scanned the code. If you have a cover library or an extra library, the web app never shows that they exist.

What you can do on the web

• View your library, albums and items.
• Download items to the computer. Downloaded copies are not encrypted.
• See the sync state for each device and your storage use.
• Move items to Trash, and empty Trash.

What the web app cannot do

• Change a code, or set a cover code or an erase code.
• Open a cover library or an extra library.
• Read your free backup in iCloud or Google Drive.

For those, use York Vault on your phone.

When the session ends

• You close the tab.
• 15 minutes pass with no activity.
• You end the session from your phone. York Vault lists every active web session.

Nothing stays in the browser after the session ends. If you open app.yorkvault.com again, the page shows only a new QR code. On a shared computer, close the tab when you are done.
