How do I move York Vault between iPhone and Android?

Updated

Use phone-to-phone transfer or an encrypted backup file. Both work from iPhone to Android and from Android to iPhone, and both are free. Your iCloud backup does not restore on Android, and your Google Drive backup does not restore on iPhone. Keep the old phone until York Vault shows every item on the new one.

Before you switch

Do these on your old phone first.

  1. Open York Vault and go to Settings.
  2. Read the backup row. It should show the same number twice, for example Backed up · 1,204 of 1,204 items · Today, 9:41 AM.
  3. Find the paper with your 12-word recovery key.
  4. Install York Vault on the new phone, from the App Store or Google Play.

If you use a cover library, open it with the cover code on the new phone after the move, and check its items too.

Move phone to phone

Use this when both phones are with you. It needs no internet connection.

  1. Keep both phones on the same Wi-Fi network, or close together.
  2. On the old phone, open York Vault and start the transfer in Settings. It shows a QR code.
  3. On the new phone, open York Vault and scan the QR code.
  4. The items move over your local network, encrypted with a one-time key.
  5. When the move ends, York Vault checks every item and shows the count.

Move with an encrypted backup file

Use this when the phones are not in the same place.

  1. On the old phone, export your library or an album as an encrypted backup file.
  2. Save the file to a USB drive, a computer or a cloud drive.
  3. On the new phone, open the file in York Vault, or share it into York Vault.
  4. Enter your code or your recovery key.

The file opens only with your code or recovery key. When the move is done, delete the extra copy from the drive you used.

Check that everything arrived

York Vault checks every item on the new phone against the transfer and shows the result. For example: “12,400 of 12,400 items”. If items are missing, it lists them with a button to try again. Erase or sell the old phone only after the new one shows every item.

What does not move

  • The free backup. On iPhone, York Vault backs up to your own iCloud. On Android, it backs up to your own Google Drive. After the move, the new phone starts its own backup. See Back up on Android and How backup works.
  • The 72-hour reset. It uses your Apple Account on iPhone and your Google account on Android, so it does not carry over. Check the setting on the new phone.

Your plan comes with you

York Vault ties Plus or Pro to your library, not to your phone or the store. When the library is on the new phone, the plan is on too, with no tap and no sign-in. You manage and cancel the plan in the store where you bought it. York Vault shows which store that is in Settings.

For anything else, write to support. A person replies within 1 business day.

Questions

Does my plan move from iPhone to Android?

Yes. York Vault ties Plus or Pro to your library, not to the store. Move the library to the new phone, and the plan is on with no tap. You still manage and cancel it in the store where you bought it. York Vault tells you which store that is. Your items move either way, because viewing, export and restore stay free on every plan.

Can I keep using York Vault on both an iPhone and an Android phone?

Yes, with Pro. Sync between iPhone and Android runs through York Cloud, encrypted on each device. Plus syncs devices on the same platform only. On Free or Plus, the iPhone and the Android phone each keep their own library and their own free backup.

Do I need my recovery key to move?

Have it with you. The backup file opens with your code or your 12-word recovery key. Write both down before you start, and check that the paper with the key is where you think it is.
