Remove location and metadata from a video

Add a video to see what it carries: the GPS location, the date recorded, the phone or camera model and any serial number. The tool removes all of it and keeps the video and sound data byte for byte, with no re-encoding. MP4, MOV, M4V and 3GP, also files of several GB. Nothing is uploaded, because the work happens in this browser.

    How it works

An MP4 or MOV file is a list of boxes. One box, mdat, holds the picture and the sound. Another, moov, holds the index that tells a player where each frame is. The metadata sits in small boxes next to the index.

    1. Read. The tool reads the box headers and the index, a few MB even for a long video. It lists what the metadata says: the location, the date, the device, serial numbers and every other field.
    2. Remove. It writes zeros over each metadata box and marks it as free space: QuickTime keys (meta), user data (udta), XMP and other vendor boxes. Every track that is not video or sound goes the same way: timed location, orientation and face area tracks, GoPro GPS tracks, timecode and subtitles. Their samples become zeros, and so does any other data between the video and sound samples.
    3. Dates. Unless you keep the date recorded, the tool sets the creation and modification times in the movie, track and media headers to zero.
    4. Save. The clean copy is the original file with these changes. It has the same size, so the index still points to the right frames, and the video and sound data stay byte for byte the same. Your original file does not change.

The tool keeps only what a player needs: the video and sound tracks, their index and their codec settings. Everything else goes, also boxes it does not know. The rotation is part of the video track header, so a video stays the right way up. If a part of the file does not read correctly, the tool makes no copy and says why. It never gives back a file it could not check.

    Questions people ask

Does this tool upload my videos?

No. The page reads each video in your browser and writes the clean copy in your browser. No video, file name or location goes to our server or to anyone else. To check, load this page, turn off Wi-Fi, and add a video. The tool still works, also with a video of several GB.

What metadata does a phone video carry?

An iPhone video stores the GPS location as ISO 6709 coordinates, the phone model, the iOS version, and the date and time with the time zone. The video of a Live Photo also holds an ID that pairs it with its photo. An Android video often holds the location, the make and model, and the Android version. A GoPro video holds the camera serial number, the lens ID, and a GPS track with a position for every second.

Does removing metadata lower the video quality?

No. The tool does not convert or compress anything. It writes zeros over the metadata blocks and marks them as free space, which every player skips. The file keeps its exact size, and the video and sound data stay byte for byte the same as in the original.

How do I remove the location from a video on iPhone?

In Photos, select the video, tap Share, tap Options, then turn off Location before you share. Location Not Included shows above the Options button. This covers the location only. The copy still holds the phone model, the iOS version and the date. To remove those too, save the video to Files and add it here.

How do I remove the location from a video on Android?

Google Photos can remove only a location that it estimated. Google's help page says: "If the location of a photo or video was automatically added by your camera, you can't edit or remove the location." Edits in Google Photos also do not change a video that you download or send by email. To clean the file itself, open this page in Chrome on the phone and add the video.

Can a video hold its location in more than one place?

Yes. Most videos store one location in the file's metadata. Some also have a timed data track with a new position every second or so: GoPro cameras, drones, dashcams, and apps that record with Apple's AVFoundation. ExifTool's documentation says it reads 124 types of timed GPS metadata. This tool finds those tracks and removes them too.

    Share videos without the location

York Vault keeps your photos and videos encrypted on your phone. When you share or export from York Vault, it removes the location, device model and dates by default, and shows what it removes first. The original in your library keeps everything, encrypted.
